Sunflower Foundation Day of Hope
We were able to donate R5000 to the
Sunflower Foundation this year to assist with
the wonderful work they do to secure bone
marrow transplants for cancer patients. We
raised funds by hosting a coin carnival and by
face-painting on the day.

MSSA 2016 National
Schools LAN Championships
The competition was held at the Secondary
Campus on Saturday and Sunday, 30 & 31 July
2016 Saturday: 4 of our learners competed in
the game - HearthStone. We came 1st, 2nd
and 3rd. Jonathan Hu won the tournament.
On Sunday 10 Learners (2 teams of 5)
competed in the Counter-Strike: Global
Offensive. We placed 2nd and 5th. Dylan van
Heerden, Adam Knoesen, Emile Tredoux,
Jackie Pillay and Tristan Oertel played in the
Dota2 section and won the tournament. These
6 learners have received SA Junior National
Federation Colours and will represent South
Africa as the Junior Protea team for 2017. They
will receive full Protea Colours if there is a
MSSA international event next year that they
compete in.
Our Superstars:
Ian & Laura
Ian Kitwanga represented Western Province
in the u/17 Academy side. His side won the
inter-provincial tournament hosted in Durban
this year. Ian has again been invited to train
with the WP squad for 2017.
Laura Wolvaardt represented South Africa
as part of the Protea Women’s Cricket team
on their tour to Ireland. It was a successful
tour for her team, but Laura also became the
youngest South African cricketer, male of
female, to score a century in an international
game.
Derby Day 2016
Parklands College played host to the annual
Derby with Elkanah on 19 & 20 August. On
the Friday we competed and collaborated
in a variety of cultural items and a cook-off
with Chef Reuben Riffel as judge. The day
ended with a music concert in Curie Hall,
with both schools’ jazz bands, rock bands
and staff bands performing. Saturday was a
glorious day in Cape Town. After the war cries
starting the event on a high note, we enjoyed
competitive matches in netball, hockey, soccer
and rugby – all played in the spirit of healthy
competition and good sportsmanship. Next
year will be the 10th Derby and we look forward
to visiting Elkanah House next year.
