The English Olympiad is a competition that

draws around 8000 entries each year and

to encourage critical thinking and creative

writing. Student prizes include free tuition

scholarships for their first-year of any course

Parklands College Science Week

Science undeniably lies at the base of

mankind’s technological progress and will

continue to do so in the future. Science

however will also have to play an intrinsic role

in solving the huge problems that we face in the

21st Century. Hence, it is imperative that the

next generation, who currently sit in our classes,

are inspired to pursue careers in Science.

Parklands College’s Science Week is

designed to do just that by exposing learners

to the wonders of Science through fun

activities like chemistry, physics

and Food Science

demonstrations,

workshops on topics

beyond the syllabus

like Nuclear Physics

and Relativity, as well

as bringing in experts to

speak on their research

fields and the career

opportunities that

are available for

young people to

pursue.

Science is a

collaborative

venture and in

line with this

learners and

teachers from

other schools

were invited

to join us in

celebrating the

beauty and

wonder of Science.

We look forward to

more schools joining us for another exciting

programme next year.

World Robot Olympiad 2016

- South African National

Competition

Pride was running on an all time high this

weekend for Parklands College when our

Robotics teams were the recipients of two Gold

medals and one Bronze medal at the South

African World Robot Olympiad (WRO) held at

Tshwane University of Technology on

Saturday (10 September). The display of results

was a culmination of months of dedication and

perseverance.

The WRO is an annual global Robotics event

incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering

and Mathematics (STEM) Education, that

comprises different categories of participation,

including the Robot Explorer, Open and Regular

categories in three different age groups, WRO

Football and an Advanced Robotics Category.

The overall themed competition for 2016 is

“RAP THE SCRAP”, which involved teams in

each of the specific categories building a robot

according to specifications, and programming it

to complete a specific task in a required amount

of time.
