Four
Elementary
teams and one
Open Category
Senior High team
received invitations
to the national
competition after
being placed
amongst the
top 20 in their
respective
categories
countrywide.
The competition
in the Elementary
Category was
tough as four
teams at the end
of two competing
rounds, earned the
maximum score
of 100. Final placement came down to the
quickest times. Team Robodog won Gold and
were crowned South African Champions in this
category with the quickest time of 79 seconds
(1:19), which is an amazing achievement
especially since they were the only team who
achieved 100 points in both rounds. Team
Beastmode received Bronze, 7 seconds behind
the winner.
The Open Category Senior High gold
medallist, Team Infinity, received compliments
from judges with their excellent standard in their
Robot Project exhibited. One of the international
judges in the competition commented on their
project being of “International Standard”.
We are proud to announce that both Gold
medalist teams, Infinity and Robodog, will
represent South Africa in their respective
categories in the WRO International
Competition in New Delhi, India from 25-26
November 2016.
Grade 11 Leadership Camp
On 2 September, the Grade 11s embarked on
the much-anticipated leadership camp. It was
a great opportunity for us to escape from our
hectic schedules
and essentially
bond as a grade.
Upon our arrival,
we were thrown
into an exciting
schedule filled with
group strengthening
activities. This
allowed us to form
new relationships
and improve our
communication
skills. Final
preparations
were made for
our creative
interpretations of
the College brand
in order for us to
showcase them.
We had to incorporate jingles, dialogues and
pantomimes etc. for our final products. It was
wonderful to see the different groups come
up with amazing ideas that culminated in
successful potential brands.
On Saturday morning we were allocated a
reflection time, which allowed each individual
learner to do a self-evaluation and also reflect
on how we could collectively contribute to the
success of the Class of 2017. The rest of the
day was jam-packed with outdoor activities and
mini lectures exploring the depth of leadership
and the responsibilities that come with it. The
evening ended off with a karaoke contest a.k.a
a “lip sync battle”, which allowed many of the
grade members to showcase their singing
talents. Some of the teachers even joined in.
The camp truly was an amazing experience
that strengthened old and new relationships.
It gave us the opportunity to expand our
knowledge on leadership and come up with new
and creative ideas for our matric year.
Watch out for the Matric Class of 2017.
We aim to be “above and beyond!”
Dance Outreach
Thank you to all the parents and learners who
donated old dance clothes over the past quarter.
The dancewear went to Amoyo Performing Arts
Foundation in Hout Bay. The recipients were
so excited when they received the items last
week, as many of them did not have leotards.
Next quarter we will be collecting again for the
foundation and we ask that any unwanted or old
dancewear be sent to the dance studio.
Tygerberg Music Eisteddfod
The annual Tygerberg Eisteddfod prize giving
was held on Tuesday 20 September and the
Music Department is proud to announce that
we have three trophy winners! From left to
right: Gregory Bosch (Classical Guitar), Lindsay
Friday (Flute) and Frank Smuts (Cello).
Music Tour: National
Youth Jazz Festival
In the July holidays eight of our music
learners set off to Grahamstown for six days
to attend the National Youth Jazz Festival. The
trip was an unforgettable experience and the
learners thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The
days were packed full of musical activities,
including workshops, electives, rehearsals and
performances.
Over 60 professional jazz musicians from all
across the world participated in the festival and
our learners had the incredible opportunity to
meet, and learn from, these skilled musicians.
The festival accepts over 300 students from
schools all around South Africa and our learners
also made many new friends from across the
country.
Special thanks to Mrs Nock and Mr Flanagan
for accompanying the learners and to Mrs Steyn
for her support in Grahamstown. Well done to
Joe Clews, Lindsay Friday, Bella Inglese, Greg
Bosch, Jake Pedro, Frank Smuts, Louis Bosch
and Hendrik Smuts for doing us proud at the
festival.
Music Week 2016
This year has been highlighted as “Music
Year” and we have had various music concerts,
festivals and outings since the beginning of
the year. A highlight was our Music Week in
August, where we also collaborated with other
departments in the school.
We started music week by having two
concerts on Monday - one for learners in the
Rec Room during first break, and the other for
Staff in the Staff Room during second break.
On Tuesday we joined forces with the Film
Studio and the Book Club to interview Craig
Strydom, a music journalist, author and one of
the creators of the Oscar-winning documentary,
Searching for Sugarman. That evening we
held a special concert featuring some of our
FET music students and Italian concert pianist
Natalia Burri.
On Wednesday College Avenue hosted
a Q&A Session with Dave Scott from the
band The Kiffness, which proved to be highly
entertaining. On Thursday we invited all those
who were interested in events management
to join the Hospitality Department for a
presentation by one of South Africa’s
top event’s management companies, ‘The Aleit
Group’. That same evening our FET learners
went on an outing to the Artscape Theatre to
watch the musical, ‘My Fair Lady’; and were
even treated to a backstage tour at the end
of the show by the Assistant Director, Ms Roche
Buckle, who is also affiliated with our school.
It was
a fantastic week
and the Music
Department is
grateful to/ for
everyone who
had a crucial
part in making
it happen.
