Public Speaking
FET
On Monday, 15 August, representatives from
our four Houses - Harvard, Yale, Cambridge,
and Oxford - battled it out in the Minor Hall to
receive the title of Best Speaker. Aza Mbovane,
Connor Fick, Pascale Schoeman and Nicolas
Cattelan filled their houses with pride as they
demonstrated the public speaking talent at
Parklands. Congratulations to Connor Fick for
winning ‘Best Impromptu’ and Aza Mbovane for
winning the main title of ‘Best Overall Speaker’.
GET
On Monday, 12 September, Parklands
College was once again astounded by the
level of public speaking at our school. Six GET
students - Tylá Fourie, Jace Baines, Michael
Oliveira, Thor Hambly Nuss, Litha Xaba, and
Chloé McGinty - delivered exceptional speeches
and impromptus. At the end of the evening,
Tylá Fourie was awarded Best Persuasive
Speaker, and Jace Baines was awarded both
Best Impromptu and the title of the evening
- Best Overall Speaker. We look forward to
seeing these young people compete in further
competitions.
Design outing to the
Two Oceans Aquarium
On Monday the 1st of August, the Grade 10
and 11 Design learners paid a visit to the Two
Oceans Aquarium. The design of the building,
the displays and their various inhabitants
provide a smorgasbord of inspiration for
anybody who enjoys feasting on the visual.
The learners took dozens of photographs and
even sat down to sketch a few of the weird and
wonderful ocean creatures.
The trip was an immense success and the
learners returned with a newfound respect for
the ocean and all it has to offer.
Drama outing to Baxter
The FET Gr10 and 11 Drama learners
attended a performance of the ten year revival
production of Laura Foot’s Karoo Moose at the
Baxter Theatre. They were accompanied by Ms.
Dodders and driven there by Mr Ben Mbaya. It
is an exceptional piece of South African theatre
and our learners thoroughly enjoyed the outing.
Life Sciences Outing
On 30 August, the Grade 11 Life Science
learners were given the opportunity to spend
the day at Kirstenbosch National Botanical
Gardens. On arrival at the Gardens we were all
immediately blown away by the breathtaking
views and surroundings. We then spent the
morning learning about the evolution of plants,
as well as their development on Earth over
billions of years. Throughout the trip, our
friendly tour guides provided us with insightful
information regarding plant life and exposed us
to the intricacy with which ecosystems function.
It was truly informative and a memorable
experience.
Blood donation
Clinic
The quarterly
blood donation
clinic held on the
23rd of August was
yet again a great
success.
We had 53
people attempting
to donate blood
of which 12 were
new donors.
We are very grateful to all of those who donated
their time and blood to this worthy cause. The
next clinic will be held on Tuesday, 18 October
2016.
August Awareness Month
This year we focused our efforts on collecting
items for the Santa Shoebox project. The
Class Representatives were tasked to collect
items that will be used to fill these boxes. The
Santa Shoebox Project originated in Cape
Town in 2006 with a humble 180 shoeboxes.
In 10 years it has grown in leaps and bounds,
with the number of Santa Shoeboxes donated
reaching a total of 551 979. The shoeboxes are
distributed to more than 1000 recipient facilities,
through more than 60 satellites around South
Africa and Namibia. Parklands is proud to be
part of this initiative.
Mandela Day 2016
This year the educators returned on 18 July
for the third quarter, which is also International
Mandela Day. We decided to reach out to our
colleagues at Inkwenkwezi in Du Noon. Every
educator brought a chocolate to school and
attached an inspirational message to it. The box
of surprises was then delivered to the principal
at Inkwenkwezi.
During the holidays, we received a request
from the Sister Superior at Nazareth House for
a donation of blankets for the elderly. Through
the efforts of the learners and staff, we were
able to deliver 96 blankets and 20 scarves
to Nazareth House. Thank you to the Class
Representatives for coordinating the collections
and to everyone who opened their hearts during
this very cold week.
Interact
One-to-One Day participation
For the past decade Parklands has
participated in the Rotary One-to-One event,
spending a day bringing fun into the lives of
the mentally disabled. It is a most rewarding
experience to witness our learners patiently
playing games, cheering and handing out little
gifts. This year the event took place at the
Bellville Velodrome and our volunteers decided
to dress up in the spirit of fun.
Reach for your Slippers
Slipper Day is one of Reach For A Dream’s
biggest fundraisers and allows the foundation
to raise a substantial amount for dreams and
projects. Slipper Day is a fun initiative that
creates awareness for the Foundation, whilst
raising funds to make more dreams a reality
for children fighting life-threatening illnesses.
Parklands supports this initiative every year and
has once again been able to donate generously
towards this worthy cause.
