There has been much activity in the art room this
past year. The learners have dealt with a variety
of themes including typography, cultural influences,
famous artists, characterisation and local fauna and
flora. The Junior Preparatory enjoyed experimenting
with colour, collage and construction, producing
countless masterpieces which have adorned walls
and classes alike. They have learnt about pattern,
composition, mosaic and basic graphic processes,
working on both individual and group projects.
The Senior Preparatory students were set
challenging drawing, painting, mixed media, graphic
and composition based tasks, and achieved wonderful
results. The role of form, perspective, colour, contrast
and cultural influence on art has been emphasized.
Beautiful collective and individual creations stand
witness to our learners’ flair for creative expression.
As has become customary in our faculty, the
learners participated in a variety of national creative
contests again this year. They once again did our
department and school proud with Mia Brown,
Alaia De Blanche, Luke Bowles, Gracia Kalombo
and Nicayla DeVilliers, taking the top places in
their age groups (10 - 12years), in the national ‘My
Dream Car’ design competition! This in itself was
an commendable achievement with thousands of
national entries. Alaia De Blanche then went on to be
selected as a global finalist, putting her in the top 30
of 590 000 enrties worldwide and then winning a trip
to Japan to attend the final prize giving!
In the third quarter, the learners worked diligently
to produce a spectrum of stunning individual art
pieces to enter into the national Cartoon Network
art competition. As is evident from the oustanding
results we have had in this endeavour over the last
five years, it was no surprise that once again there
were oustanding artworks produced! Our learners
truly have incredible talent and we have many
aspiring artists in our faculty! Overall, it was another
productive year, filled with colour, experimentation
and creation!
