The year has been a fun-filled, exciting
experience for the learners in Grade Five.
The children have bonded on our various trips
outside of school at the Egyptian museum,
being rained upon during their tractor rides
at !Khwa-ttu and feeding squirrels at the
Company Gardens. This was all in between
the enriching talks and demonstrations that
they witnessed and participated in.
Despite the apprehension from some
children, the highlight of the year has to be
the camp toWortelgat in Stanford. Here
the children forged new friendships and
strengthened old ones. Fears and challenges
were overcome and confidence and
characters were built.
This year the learners had to adapt to
subject teaching and getting used to different
teachers and their individual teaching
styles. They have had the importance of
responsibility and accountability instilled
within them every day. We have witnessed
their growth in both maturity and
independence.
In the classroom, the learners are
encouraged to create their own knowledge
through the research of topics, group work,
class discussions and facilitation by the
teacher. The use of iPads in the classroom
adds a wonderful dynamic to the classroom
as the children are eager to learn and are
invigorated by the process. There has been a
focused approach on integrating the subjects
and the children have had to broaden their
creative horizons to incorporate knowledge
from other subjects and to think ‘out of the
box’. It has been wonderful to observe how
the children are learning to formulate their
own opinions and to challenge their peers on
different ideas.
