Information presented by the educators in a variety of digital formats
including video, audio and text has catered for all learning styles which is far
more effective than before. Learners in Grade Four and Five have waved
goodbye to paper diaries. Instead, their homework is typed and emailed to
their parents using Opus Domini. Mathletics remains a multi-levelled pro-
gramme for the learners to work on individually and at their own pace, enjoy-
ing the digital sounds, features, rewards and challenges that this programme
offers. Furthermore, the learners in the Senior Preparatory have created
their own content using the various researched apps of Book Creator, Pages,
iMovie, Grafio Lite, Popplet, Explain Everything and Pic Collage.
The Grade Six learners have filmed themselves presenting Afrikaans
orals and have also conducted peer interviews around specific topics. After
enjoying an inspiring teacher-created Keynote with hyperlinks between slides,
the Grade Six historians created a curriculum vitae of a famous explorer.
Geography took on a new dimension with the Grade Sixes navigating their
way through a Keynote presentation filled with facts and activities. Balanced
arguments took place after researching various topics and democratic parties
campaigned their way to leadership positions by creating digital portfolios and
campaign posters to secure their positions.
The Grade Five learners have practised their summarising skills in History
and Geography using a variety of apps. They have made use of apps called
iMovie or Keynote to document and record the processes when creating San
tribe instruments. Their digital works have enhanced their oral presenta-
tions by projecting their visual information on the whiteboard to share with
their peers and then explaining the process concerned. Integration between
English and History has allowed the learners to create their own content by
using various images, video clips and through the evaluation of websites for
valuable information.
The Grade Four learners have been on geographical adventures by navigat-
ing an interactive Keynote presentation through self-discovery filled with
explanations and integration activities. They have expressed opinions on
video clips containing facts about farming techniques and food processing.
The young Grade Four scientists were tasked to simulate the water cycle in
their kitchen by conducting an experiment, record themselves and then to
explain the process. By integrating History and English, learners have written
informed essays based on their experience learning about leaders. Their
extensive research and project work has enhanced their overall understand-
ing of the topic at hand.
The Grade Four learners have also created a digital portfolio by creating
their own websites using the app called Zapd. These websites contain a fair
amount of the projects/tasks they have worked on throughout the year and
have been ‘flipped’ into their own Flipboard magazine. Learners have also
‘subscribed’ to their teacher’s magazine which is filled with additional reading,
specifically created Parklands College content, consolidation exercises, exten-
sion work and other fun activities.
Our parent body has shown their support in the implementation of the
iPad and MacBook devices into everyday school life.We have enjoyed having
them in the classrooms during the Open ICT Mornings, where they have
participated as the ‘learners’, enjoying the revolutionised classroom of the
21st century.
