Cape Town Speech and
Drama Eisteddfod
This year’s results were spectacular with no less
than 5 Diplomas (90%+), 8 Honours+ (85-89%)
and 8 Honours (80-84%) being awarded to our
Secondary Faculty learners for their pieces. The
learners excelled in Poetry and Prose speaking, as
well as Monologue and Duologue work. Many of
these learners are preparing for the Trinity Exams
next semester and the contest allows them the
important opportunity to perform for a public
audience and to experience criticism from an
impartial adjudicator. We congratulate our learners
on maintaining their composure in the face of
stringent adjudication and for making us proud.

Public Speaking
Parklands Public Speaking Championships
On 3 May we held our Annual Parklands Public
Speaking Championships. This has become quite an
institution amongst the public speaking fraternity
at Parklands. What made the event extra-special,
was the two adjudicators – Timothy deWet (a past
winner of the Rodney Mhungu Public Speaking
Trophy) and Rodney Mhungu (the donator of said
trophy). In her thank you speech, Emma Baines
described the two of them as gods of public
speaking at Parklands College.
Emma leaves the College this year and will also
join the ranks of those who are past legends of
public speaking at Parklands College.Although she
did not manage to win the trophy, she was the
deserved winner of Best Persuasive Speaker 2013.

Luke Fourie,
Robert Kucera and
Nicol Steyn
The rest of the awards were wrapped
up by Nicol Steyn. These included Best
Impromptu Speaker, Best After Dinner
Speaker and the Rodney Mhungu Trophy
for Public Speaking. Other noteworthy
competitors included Luke Fourie, Janell
Matthews, Nina Matthews and Mihlali Qupe-
Matyana.
SACEE Forum Discussion
On 31
July 2013 we were privileged to host one of
the SACEE Forum Discussion Competition
Preliminary Rounds. This year, we were the
defending champions and thus had a lot to
live up to.
The team lived up to our reputation for
being a loud, boisterous team that projects
high energy whenever we compete.The
team included Emma Baines (chair), Janell
Matthews, Nicol Steyn,Aya Fouad and Luella
Vraagom.As adjudicators have said repeatedly
about our two teams over the last two years,
“You always look like you are having such
fun”.
We won the Preliminary Round and
progressed to the Finals, but unfortunately
were not able to emulate the 2012 victory.
The good news is that we only lose two
of the team this year and there is good
succession coming through.
Derby Day
At our annual Derby Day we
competed, as usual, at the Forum Discussion.
New rules were applied in which the team
had to be made up of three seniors and two
juniors.Although we lost this event, Emma
Baines was named Best Chair and Alaia de
Blanche was an outstanding new speaker who
showed exciting prospects for the future.
As a new addition to the Derby Friday
Suite, one senior and one junior public
speaker had to give an impromptu speech in
competition with Elkanah. Luke Fourie was
our senior speaker, while Robert Kucera was
our junior speaker. Congratulations to Robert
who won the junior speaker section.
National Individual Debating and Public Speaking
Championships
As we do every year, we sent a team to the National Individual
Debating and Public Speaking Championships. This year it was held at St
Stithians in Johannesburg. We took a team of three Grade 11’s - Luke
Fourie, Nicol Steyn and LeslieWu - as well as Robert Kucera in Grade
9. It was a strong team and Parklands produced their best set of results
ever.
Luke came 8th overall and topped the ranking for Prepared Speeches.
Nicol came 3rd overall. Both of these individuals have been selected
for the National team to compete at theWorld Individual Debating and
Public Speaking Championships to be held in Lithuania next year.
Special mention must be made of Robert who achieved 19th place
overall - an outstanding achievement for a Grade 9.The adjudicators all
took note of that name as a potential force to be reckoned with in the
future.
