Guiding Learners On Their Path To Purpose

Academics

Introduction to Academics

Exemplary teaching, innovative instructional activities, and authentic assessment form the core of our programme. Our learning activities are meticulously designed to cultivate a dynamic environment that nurtures learners’ natural curiosity and creativity, fostering confidence. Within this modern and technologically rich setting, educators seamlessly integrate content, knowledge, and skills. The curriculum exposes young learners to computational thinking, electronics, the sciences, commerce, the arts, and technology, laying the foundation for lifelong learning. Our teachers, specialists in their fields, foster a culture of challenge, stimulation, and achievement, setting high expectations while recognizing each learner’s unique potential, learning styles, interests, and skills.

Parklands College has consistently featured on the list of top achieving schools in the Western Cape and we are proud of our matric pass rate since our first learners wrote this exit examination in 2000.

We continue to celebrate the success of our past learners at both national and international tertiary institutions.

Curriculum implementation is guided by research and aligned with national guidelines and policies. We follow the national Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) from Grade R through to Grade 12. Our seamless integration of technology into teaching and learning practices aims to produce learners who can:

  • identify and solve problems and make decisions using critical and creative thinking;
  • work effectively as individuals and with others as members of a team;
  • organise and manage themselves and their learning activities responsibly and effectively;
  • collect, analyse, organise, and critically evaluate information;
  • communicate effectively using visual, symbolic and/or language skills; and
  • use science and technology skills effectively and critically.

Throughout the College, our approach to learning is innovative, enriched and flexible, with an emphasis on success for every learner.

Culture

Arts & Culture

Culture is seamlessly woven into our curriculum, with Performing and Visual Arts serving as pivotal channels for free expression and exposure to diverse art forms.

In the realm of visual arts, learners engage with various disciplines, including painting, drawing, three-dimensional art, mixed media, and digital arts. Our art rooms boast cutting-edge technology.

Dance, drama, and music, being universal languages, transcend cultural barriers and align with our mission to nurture well-rounded learners. Through our comprehensive performing arts program, learners find creative outlets that connect them not only to each other, but also to their cultural roots and the broader cultural landscapes of South Africa and the world. Our learners enjoy frequent outings to the theatres, museums, festivals and exhibitions.

A wide range of instrument training is offered, fostering musicality and dramatic expression from Pre-Primary to Grade 12, with learners encouraged to take an instrument and join the College orchestra. Throughout the year, we organise public performances, and our professionally acclaimed musicals are a testament to their high quality. Learners are encouraged to formalise their training by participating in Eisteddfods, Royal Academy of Dance and Trinity of London music examinations.

We are proud patrons of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and host regular performances.

Sports

Overview of Sports

Engagement in campus life plays a vital role in the comprehensive growth of each learner, offering them the chance to actively participate and excel in diverse sporting pursuits.

From Pre-Primary onwards, sports are seamlessly integrated into College life. We perceive these activities as platforms for learners to cultivate both physical and life skills, fostering values such as healthy competition, self-discipline, and camaraderie. Additionally, it facilitates social interaction with other schools at both national and international levels.

Sporting facilities include rugby, soccer, and astro hockey fields, multidisciplinary courts (tennis and netball), cricket ovals and nets, in addition to half Olympic and Olympic-sized swimming and water polo pools providing for aquatic activities.

Sport provides situations in which learners learn to depend on one another and offer assistance to someone else. It fosters a spirit of teamwork, mutual co-operation and a sense of working towards a common goal. Learners in the Preparatory Faculty are required to participate in at least one sport offered, per quarter.

Learners in the Secondary Faculty are required to participate in at least one sport and cultural activity on offer.

Our learners engage in competitive sport and embark on frequent national and international sports tours.
