Some quotes from the talk by Corne Krige:

•

Lead from the heart

•

Lead a balanced life

•

Be an example: live by what you preach

•

Lead a spiritual and ethical life: stand for

something

•

“The secret to success in life lies in the

success of your secret life.”

The 2016 Executive prefect body.

Duke Orsino:

If music be the food of love, play on,

Give me excess of it; that surfeiting,

The appetite may sicken, and so die.

Twelfth Night Act1, Scene1, 1-13,

WilliamShakespeare

Few quotes are as appropriate for the month

of love and few quotes could point as accurately

to the exciting year that lies ahead for the

Culture department here at the Secondary

Faculty.

Music News

At the Cultural assembly on Friday, 5

February, Parklands College’s Year of Music

will be officially launched and what an exciting

year it promises to be. The first event is to

be held in the Minor Hall on Wednesday, 10

February where the accomplished Italian

pianist, and Parklands parent, Natalia Burri will

perform a programme of Beethoven, Chopin

and Prokofieff. Natalia Burri was born in Verona,

Italy, where she studied and graduated in Piano

and Composition. In 1995, she started working

with the world famous tenor Danilo Castari and

their collaboration lasted for ten years. During

this time, they toured and performed in many

different countries around Europe. Natialia has

a passion for teaching children to play piano

and she loves performing. She will be joined

on stage by two of Parklands College’s own

Music teachers, Mrs Beverley du Plessis (voice)

and Mr Ash-Lee Louwskieter (trombone). The

concert starts at 18:30 and it is a compulsory

event for all FET music learners. It is a great

privilege to be afforded the opportunity to see

an artist of this caliber perform and we extend

a warm invitation to interested parents and

members of the Parklands community.

Next month, the Secondary Faculty will be

hosting the inaugural Parklands College Music

Festival on March, 12. Music learners from

other schools will be invited to participate

in a day full of collaboration with Parklands

Musicians and there will be a highly anticipated

performance by the Grassy Sparks in the

evening on the Sandown campus. Read the

blog to keep updated on this exciting event and

other planned Music events for 2016.

Drama

This year we welcome Mr Joshua Wyngaard

into the Drama department. Mr Wyngaard,

although relatively new to teaching, is no

stranger to the stage and screen. He is teaching

the GET phase and is involved in the recently

introduced Film and Media course offered to the

Grade 8s. This year, the FET Drama learners

will be participating in the Shakespeare Schools

Festival. The 25 learners will be performing

in Shakespeare’s great tragedy Macbeth on

April, 21 2016 at the Baxter Theatre. Visit the

SSFSA website for more information and to

view some images from our past production of

Othello staged in 2013.

Trinity Drama has had a healthy intake of new

learners and details regarding Eisteddfods will

be made available via the blog at a later stage

of the quarter.

Dance

Congratulations to all of the dancers who

participated in the RAD and ISTD examinations

at the end of 2015. The ballet dancers were

participated in the Medal tests. Across the three

different faculties, we accumulated 4 Bronze,

11 Silver, 9 Gold Medals as well as 4 Merits and

31 Distinctions for the ISTD examinations. We

were awarded 2 Merits, 41 Distinctions and 6

Visual Arts

After outstanding Matric results in 2015, the

Visual Arts and Design department continues to

grow in its pursuit of excellence. Chloë Saville,

one of our Culture prefects for 2016, has

embraced the challenge of making the Visual

Arts more visible on our campus and will be

presenting the first slideshow of our talented

visual artists at assembly on Friday, 5 February.

The Culture prefects have also embarked on

an Artist of the Month initiative which will see

learners’ work exhibited on the digital notice

boards around the school making art a part of

our everyday life here at the college. Artists

from the College will be entering pieces into the

Eisteddfod competition for the first time in 2016

and we eagerly anticipate their success on this

public platform.

Cultural Tours

The Culture tour to Europe and the Jazz tour

to the Grahamstown festival are scheduled for

later in the year. Mrs Cass and Mr Flanagan will

be part of the staff accompanying learners to

the former and Mr Flanagan, Mrs Nock and Mr

Clayton to the latter.

We encourage everyone to explore some

facet of the huge variety of Cultural activities

happening at the College. 2016 may not be a

‘production year’ but we, as a department, are

always in production and we would love you to

join us as audience.

INTERACT REPORT

The Interact Club, our society focussing

on social awareness and outreach at the

Secondary faculty, has started off with a bang

as learners have already started bringing in

chocolates for our annual Easter Egg drive.

These Easter Eggs are then given to some

old age and children’s homes. Our annual
