We were very proud, not only of the learners
and staff who so excellently represented the
College at such a prestigious international event
but of the Parklands College family as a whole.
Were it not for the learners, parents, educators,
directors and management consistently
investing in the College and being part of our
journey, story and team, we would not have
a school to showcase on such a platform.
Parklands College is an incredible place of
teaching and learning and it would not be so
without the entire community. Sharing our story
has given us the opportunity to inspire and
affect positive change in schools and other
educational institutions around the world. This
is an achievement of which we all can feel truly
proud.
Class Representatives elected
Congratulations to the newly elected class
representatives of 2016. These students were
elected by their peers, after being nominated
by their classmates, and after presenting a
speech to their respective homerooms. Our
class representatives serve a six-month term,
under the guidance of the Prefects in charge
of Learner Affairs. The class representative
processes form an integral part of the College’s
learner leadership programme.
The newly elected class representatives
attended a leadership workshop on the evening
of Tuesday, 2 February. The new, young leaders
spent time growing their leadership skills under
the watchful eyes of the Learner Affairs Prefects:
Karen Wu, Fatima Banyu and Michael Nesbitt.
During the evening, the class representatives
discussed the roles and responsibilities of being
a leader at the College. Mr Biermann, the staff
member in charge of the class representatives,
was also there to make sure everything ran
according to plan and that the new class
representatives were well equipped.
We wish our newly elected class
representatives well for their time in office.
Congratulations to the following learners:
LEARNER LEADERSHIP
2016 Prefect Camp - Wortelgat,
Stanford
On 8 January, the 2016 prefect body
embarked on a camp to Wortelgat just outside
Stanford accompanied by Mr Joubert, Mr Melliar
and Mrs Dodders. The drive was filled with a
brilliant vibe, awesome people and a hearty
breakfast from the N2 Wimpy. On arrival we got
straight into some icebreakers and activities that
promoted team building. On the second day we
began our planning for the year ahead - from
theme weeks to articulating our goals.
The prefect body has come up with the
acronym G.R.I.T that stands for Growth,
Respect, Initiative and Trust. We as a prefect
body believe that to go further in life you need
GRIT.
Over the years you mature, not only in
physical growth but mental and personal
growth. This prepares you for the world ahead.
Respect is an important part of society and the
2016 matric group will constantly strive to earn
the respect of the school in whatever activity we
take on. We want to be the group that takes the
initiative in leading the school to new heights
and we want to inspire the learners to take the
initiative in their own lives. As the elders of the
school we want to create that sense of trust
with the learners and teachers, giving them the
opportunity to accept Parklands College as a
unit.
The matrics of 2016 are a close grade and
we will strive to solidify that family feeling at
Parklands College while making sure everyone
has enough GRIT to achieve their full potential.
Thank you for giving the prefects the opportunity
to serve you in 2016.

2016 Prefect Blazer Ceremony
Becoming a prefect is a monumental honour
that carries deep responsibility. It is an honour
that is represented in the wearing of a navy
blue honours blazer. This blazer is a symbol
for the commitment and initiative 18 elected
students have shown in their school lives. It is
a symbol for the process of laying one’s own
needs and desires aside to serve the College.
It is a symbol that shows every member of
Parklands College that whoever wears it is a
living, breathing representation of the Parklands
core values.
On Tuesday, 12 January all the prefects and
their parents were invited to a Prefect Blazer
Ceremony in the Minor Hall. Mr Corne Krige,
former Springbok rugby captain, addressed the
2016 prefects and their parents on effective
leadership, followed by affording each parent
the opportunity to put the prefect blazer
on their son or daughter. This gave each
prefect a renewed sense of responsibility and
commitment as a prefect.
