The first day of school was very exciting,

The Grade Twos couldn’t wait to get thinking

and writing.

With their bags on their backs,

and smiles on their faces,

They climbed up the stairs and

found their new places.

Feeling grown up they unpacked

all their things,

And shared their news,

in morning rings.

They listened carefully,

as their teachers explained,

About numbers, and reading, and stretching

their brain!

They learnt about Six Bricks,

and Google Classroom,

And about other things they

would be learning about soon.

At the end of the day each could agree,

They would try to be the best,

they could possibly be!

I Am In Grade Two

I am in Grade Two

I wonder how big my ship is going to be.

I hear a rocket.

I see a castle.

I want a ship.

I think I have a dog.

I Am In Grade Two

by Tyler Heyns

I am in Grade Two.

I wonder what I am going to do when

I grow up.

I hear someone talking.

I see my friends working.

I want to be a professional soccer player.

I think about what my mom is doing.

I am in Grade Two.

I pretend that I am sixteen years old.

I feel my skin.

I touch Connor’s ball.

I worry about nothing.

I hope that I catch big fish at the river.

I am in Grade Two.

I understand that 6+6=12

I say that I can hula hoop.

I dream about my birthday.

I try my best at work.

I will swim when I get home.

I am in Grade Two.

I am in Grade Two.

I wonder if I can fly.

I hear my friend.

I see a car and a dog.

I want Lego for Christmas.

I think that 24+24=48

I pretend I am at a show.

I feel excited about my birthday.

I touch fire and a dragon.

I worry about my Lego.

I hope to be rich and very good at Maths.

I understand that 7000+7000=14 000

I say that I can count to a million.

I dream about my friend.

I try to do my best.

I will enjoy school.

I am in Grade Two.

A Grade Three

Learning Adventure…

The Grade Three learners really impressed

their teachers in the first few weeks of school.

They proved that they are ready to be a part of

this exciting journey that will take them on to

new heights next year. The Grade Three group

has a lot to look forward to this year.

We started the year off with the learners

having their first experience of using Six

Bricks in the classroom. Six Bricks has

been developed by the Lego Foundation to

help enrich language, problem solving and

collaborative skills. The use of the bricks in the

classroom has added a level of learning that

revolves around having fun. The learners have

been engrossed in these activities since day

one.

We look forward to our first outing of the year

to the MTN Science Centre. The Grade Threes

will be learning more about their bodies and

how systems work. To encourage our budding

scientists, we will be building our own set of

“lungs’” which will give our learners insight into

how the breathing system functions.

The learners are doing a good job as role

models to the Grade One and Two learners, and

working hard to achieve their goals of becoming

Grade Three Monitors. Many of our learners

have been busy enjoying the co-curriculars

on offer and it is encouraging to witness their

enthusisatic participation in all that they do.

They continue to produce work of a good quality

and seem to be enjoying learning all the new

concepts.

They have truly shown their dedication and

determination to achieve good results inside

and outside of the classroom. We look forward

to a year filled with exploration, innovation and

the further development of a skill set for life long

learning.

A Cultural Adventure…

Head of Culture: Dalene du Pisanie

Music

Our young musicians have settled well into

their music lessons and ensemble groups.

We are looking forward to many exciting

performances from our various groups. Our

Junior Preparatory Choir will be taking part

in this year’s Tygerberg Eisteddfod, the West

Coast Song Festival as well as the ATKV

Applous Competition. The Junior Orchestra has

been working on a composition by Mr Ernstzen

called ‘Marching Madness’, which will be

performed in Assembly soon.

Art and Drama

The Junior Preparatory Art Department has

started the year

with loads of

creativity and

various colour

theories and

techniques.

The children are

enthusiastic and

very committed

towards their

creative

sessions, whereby they are encouraged to

experiment and express themselves freely,

within the safe space of our Art classroom.

Our Art and Drama Societies have welcomed

many enthusiastic learners and we are looking

forward to showcasing their work later in the

year.

Dance

The Dance Department is in full swing

and preparations have begun to prepare our

dancers for the Cape Town Eisteddfod, which

will be held in May. Many hours of fun, hard

work, concentration and effort are required to

ensure the dancers work together as a team.

We would like to congratulate all of the

dancers who participated in the RAD and ISTD

examinations at the end of 2015. Ms Joyce

Myroff examined the ballet dancers and Ms

Trish McKenna examined the tap and modern

dancers. Some of our dancers also participated

in the Medal Tests and across the three

different faculties we accumulated 4 Bronze,

11 Silver, and 9 Gold Medals. We were also

awarded 4 Merits and 31 Distinctions for the

ISTD examinations, for the RAD Ballet we were

awarded 2 Merits, 41 Distinctions and 6 Higher

Grade Presentations. We are very proud of all

the dancers’ achievements.

A Sporting Adventure…

Sports Co-ordinator: Matthew Watson

“The five S’s of sports training are: stamina,

speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest

of these is spirit.”

- Ken Doherty

The Junior Preparatory fields, courts and

pool are once again alive with the excited

chatter and team spirit of our learners who have

eagerly approached the sport and extramural

activities on offer. Our Grade Ones have joined

the programme with tremendous enthusiasm

and energy. We look forward to an exciting

summer season with opportunities for our young

sportsmen and women to develop newfound

skills, and to participate in galas, festivals and

match fixtures.
