JUNIOR PREPARATORY FACULTY GRADES 1 - 3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . From the Principal’s Office Chantel Lamb This quarter started with a wonderful celebration of reading and World Book Day on 23 April 2024. We had shows, book sales and a Wizard of Oz Dress Up Day in support of our Secondary Faculty production scheduled later in the year. We have enjoyed having parents on campus for our Project Based Learning Showcases and are very proud of what our learners have achieved. We have enjoyed visits from authors, a rescue dog from Fallen Angels, a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Elmer Day creations and a virtual cookalong with Chef Kerry for our families. Our Grade Threes visited the Secondary Faculty to explore hospitality and decorated a cupcake while learning Afrikaans vocabulary related to this. Takeover Day was once again a hit as our very creative Enrichment team organised exciting activities for the learners. The Grade Ones and Sixes participated in Sport, the Grade Twos and Fives honed their ‘Movie-Making’ skills with the Culture Department and the Grade Threes and Fours designed and problem-solved in our MakerSpace venues. This was an exciting day of collaboration, design, problem solving, critical thinking and a whole lot of fun! Our outings are carefully selected to support what the children are learning in the curriculum. Our Grade Ones went to Wonderdal where the children discovered the world of science, nutrition and nature across a variety of indoor and outdoor activity zones. The Grade Twos visited SANCCOB and learnt more about the rescue, rehabilitation and release of ill, injured, abandoned and oiled seabirds – especially endangered species like the African penguin. Our Grade Threes went to The Alpaca Loom and learnt about the breeding herd and how wool is processed into a finished product. The highlight was witnessing the birth of two alpacas. We look forward to a restful holiday and another jammedpacked quarter when we return to school on Wednesday 10 July. SENIOR PREPARATORY FACULTY GRADES 4 - 6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . From the Principal’s Office Lee-ann Steynberg Winter has definitely begun and as we begin to think about holidays we need to take a moment to reflect on a quarter that brought us joy, new experiences and moments to share. Grade 6 learners started the quarter by gazing at the stars and admiring the moon before working on their projects for our Science Expo. Congratulations on their hard work and dedication to achieving strong results for the District Expo. Grade 5 learners discovered more about the world of minerals and mining and developed ideas and thoughts around ways to assist in improving the mining industry. They had fun with Crystal Geodes and shared their research on the World of Gems. Grade 4s explored green screening in Afrikaans and worked on their poetry skills in Drama. They have also been involved in creating beautiful bookmarks for our upcoming Deputy Heads Conference. On 11 June we celebrated International Day of Play. This was the first ever International Day of Play, and marked a significant milestone in efforts to preserve, promote, and prioritise playing so that all people, especially children, can reap the rewards and thrive to their full potential. This initiative was supported by the United Nations. We are looking forward to a well deserved break and returning refreshed and ready to tackle quarter 3 in July. SCIENCE EXPO The Grade 6 Internal Science Expo was held last week Wednesday, 8 May. Our project topic: “Greenwashing: An Experimental Study About The Effects Of Misleading and Deceptive Environmental Claims In Advertising Within The Clothing Industry” was approved in February and I initially wondered why we were asked to start working on it this early considering that it was only due in May. However, once I started the research and planning on the interesting topic we had chosen, I quickly realised that a lot of work was required which explained why we were given three months to complete the project. We were very fortunate to receive a detailed time frame from our Science teacher and this ensured that we were on track to complete the project on time. I must admit that it was a challenge getting started but once we had our Research Plan in place, it became much easier to do and thoroughly enjoyable too! We enjoyed going to the stores to purchase garments for our project as well as interacting with consumers who agreed to complete our questionnaires. My partner and I spent hours working on this project, mostly on weekends and this made me understand and value the importance of teamwork and time management. We were extremely relieved when the final Project Report and poster were done and were very happy with the quality of work we produced. On the day of the Expo, I knew that I was well prepared and that it would be our day to shine and showcase our findings. I must admit though that I was nervous at first to present our project to our esteemed judges but they made me feel very comfortable and it was not as overwhelming as I thought. They were also very impressed with our project and we were very pleased with the positive feedback we received from them. I knew that the quality of projects showcased this year was of a high standard so was very excited and honoured when I was informed that I was selected to represent our school at the District Expo on Saturday, 18 May 2024. I am so grateful that all our hard work and efforts have paid off and so happy that we have been recognised for this. I would like to thank Rain Sun for being such a committed and dedicated teammate. I would also like to thank my Science Teacher, Ms Hodges for all her support and guidance through every phase of the project. Thank you for instilling in me a passion for Science and I am looking forward to doing many more projects in the future. “Reaching Outwards, Growing Minds, Building Futures.” - Saadhil Rampath, Grade 6P MAKERSPACE This quarter, our Maker-space was active with the energy of our Grades 4 to 6 learners tackling real-world challenges through hands-on projects. Grade 4 students explored the strength of shapes in structures, practising with Tinkercad to turn their ideas into 3D designs, which they then built into practical prototypes. Grade 5 took on the mining industry, creating devices to boost mining efficiency and safety with an eye on sustainability and fresh ideas. Using TinkerCAD and recycled materials, they turned their imaginative concepts into reality. Grade 6 was busy experimenting with MaxIQ light and UV exposure meters, analysing their findings, and designing lunar landers inspired by Apollo missions. They also ventured into coding with Micro:Bits and discovered the potential of servos in their creations. These projects sparked teamwork, problem-solving, and a love for discovery, making our Maker-space a lively centre of creativity. We're incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished and can't wait to see what next quarter brings!
LIBRARY We hit the ground running and with much anticipation as we headed for World Book Day which never takes a day but several events to properly do justice to such an important occasion. Hooked On Books kicked off the celebrations with two vibrant shows, and these talented actors always provide memorable entertainment and much inspiration to inspire reading. We welcomed Lori-Ann Preston, author of one of our class readers, who introduced us to her latest book. The wonderful ladies of Bargain Books treated us to two exciting shopping days and we just loved the great selection of books to browse. Soon we moved on to Star Wars day to spend time with the characters of one of the great stories of our time. We heard the latest news, played Kahoot and read from our vast selection of books. Elmer Day inspired us once again to show our true colours, encourage each other and always sprinkle a bit of humour wherever we go. In our libraries, June is the month to focus on our environment, endangered animals and oceans, and inspire each other to make small changes that could make a big impact on our environment. Two Lit Quiz teams attended an inter schools event and impressed with their incredible book knowledge. This bodes well for our inter house events which will be taking place next quarter. There is always something to look forward to if you love books! ROBOTICS This quarter has been an exhilarating journey for our learners as they dived into a variety of STEM activities designed to ignite their curiosity and enhance their learning experience. From coding to robotics, our learners have embraced the challenge and showcased remarkable creativity and problem-solving skills. Our youngest learners in Grade 1 and 2 explored the basics of coding with Scratch Jr, creating interactive stories and games that introduced them to sequencing, loops, and events. Grade 3 learners took their learning to new heights with LEGO WeDo, building robotic arms, garbage trucks with tilting mechanisms, and fishes with flapping tails, allowing them to understand basic engineering principles and the mechanics of movement. Meanwhile, Grade 4 learners embarked on a coding adventure with Swift Playgrounds, solving puzzles and completing challenges using Byte, which enhanced their coding skills and sharpened their problem-solving abilities. Grade 5 learners engaged in hands-on projects with Tinker Boards to create intricate marble runs and built towers using just six bricks and a LEGO Spike Prime grabber, emphasising precision, planning and perseverance. Grade 6 learners delved into more advanced coding with CS First and Swift Playgrounds, exploring variables, conditions, and logical operators, which prepared them for future programming challenges and enhanced their analytical thinking. One of the highlights of this quarter was the Enrichment Takeover Day, where Grade 3 and 4 learners paired up to design and race balloonpowered cars, combining creativity, engineering and teamwork. These STEM activities fostered creativity and innovation, enhanced problem-solving skills, promoted teamwork and collaboration, developed technical skills, and encouraged perseverance. As we look forward to the next quarter, we are excited to continue this journey of discovery and innovation, building on the strong foundation laid this term. The future is bright for our young scientists, engineers, and coders! CULTURE The main focus of the second quarter for the Culture Department is the preparation for and participation in the various Eisteddfods we enter. We had a large number of Ballet, Modern and Tap entries for the Cape Town Eisteddfod, held at Sea Point Civic Centre, which included a Production number, titled, ‘Midnight at the Toyshop’, involving 38 preparatory dancers and voiced by our own Mrs Buckle. Our three dance teachers, Mrs Stander, Miss Dean and Ms Holder worked tirelessly to prepare our dancers for this enormous task; choreographing each piece to specific music and creating the costumes for each dancer. We are very proud of Yara Arries who won the Classical Set Solo in her age group. Our Art, Music and Drama departments support the Western Cape Virtual Eisteddfod. We have 200 entries in the Eisteddfod this year and will receive our results next quarter. The Preparatory Music Department continues to grow and we have been treated to Assembly performances by individuals, choir and Marimba Bands. They continue to display confidence and passion, captivating the audience. We are extremely proud of our Senior Choir who performed at the Cape Town City Hall in the Choral Choir festival. They looked smart in their new choir waistcoats. The Art and Design classes have been focussed on designing and creating the gifts which will be given to the delegates attending the Deputies conference in September. Beautiful Cape Town-themed bookmarks and notebook covers have been created and we’re looking forward to seeing the final products. The Grade Five and Six Drama classes faced a Shakespeare challenge this quarter. Using phrases that Shakespeare created and we still use today, the learners designed GIFs and posters. Predictably, the boys all focussed on ‘off with his head’, ‘fight fire with fire’ and ‘foul play/fair play’, whereas the girls were intrigued by ‘love is blind’, ‘green-eyed monster’ and ‘bedazzled’ to name a few. The Grade Four learners practised modulation skills and experimented with iMovie, Greenscreen, Keynote and Sketches to animate and bring poetry to life.
We hosted a Takeover Day once again this quarter. The Grade Two and Five learners had great fun creating their short scripted film using their maker space puppets. Green screen sheets filled the Grade Three quad as iMovie techniques were used to bring the characters to life. Music from Garageband added the final touch. The excitement was palpable and a fun day of learning was had by all. Our enrichment teachers continue to strive for excellence, extending the learners in our care by challenging them with innovative ideas and encouraging them to pursue all thought processes in their design thinking. SPORT From netball, hockey, soccer and rugby to festivals, the sporting landscape at the Preparatory Faculty is rich with opportunities for learners to thrive and excel. This quarter we had the unique opportunity to collaborate with the Secondary Faculty. In particular, our hockey learners benefitted from regular excursions to the Secondary Faculty's Astro turf. This provided our hockey players with access to wonderful facilities and invaluable practice opportunities. This partnership not only enhances sports development but also fosters a sense of connection across the faculties. Festivals serve as a chance to showcase our learners’ talents and compete against other schools. These events are about fostering sportsmanship, teamwork and personal growth. Whether it's on the field or in the stands, the spirit of friendly competition and mutual respect permeates every festival, creating lasting memories for participants. Sports at the Preparatory Faculty encourage valuable life lessons that extend far beyond the playing field. From teamwork and leadership to perseverance and resilience, learners develop a range of skills that will serve them well in all aspects of their lives, as can be seen in the Knysna Netball Tour feedback. KNYSNA NETBALL TOUR Our time at the Knysna Netball Tour was an incredible journey filled with unforgettable moments and remarkable achievements. From the joyous afternoon splash in the hotel pool to the delightful "build a burger" dinner, the girls embraced every experience with enthusiasm and energy from day one. Despite facing challenges such as rain delays and slippery courts, their determination remained unwavering. Even though we didn't always come out on top in every match, their resilience and passion for the game were truly admirable. Interacting with the elephants at Knysna Elephant Park was a highlight, creating cherished memories and spreading sheer happiness. And who could forget our outstanding victory against St George's? It was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. The adventures didn't stop there; from exploring the Knysna Estuary to battling it out on the court, each day brought new opportunities for growth and camaraderie. And on the final day, despite a tough match, our girls showcased exceptional defence and determination, ending the tournament on a high note. We reflect on the incredible journey we've shared and the support that has propelled us forward. To our talented netball girls, thank you for embodying the spirit of sportsmanship and resilience throughout this memorable tour. - Simoné Prinsloo U/12 Netball Tour Recap A fantastic tour from start to finish! The girls grew from strength to strength, with a notable difference in their performances from Friday to Sunday. They put in extra hours off the court, formalising strategic plays and being dynamic with squad rotation. Despite facing elite opposition, the girls showed grit, determination and courage. While the results didn’t always go our way, the girls fought exceptionally well and secured some wins as the tournament progressed. It was an incredible showing and a true example of what it means to be a Parkie. - Jared Margetts. OUTREACH “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” – Josh Billings We once again had the opportunity to support our furry friends at Fallen Angels Pet Rescue Haven. Fallen Angels is a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that emphasises the essential role animals play in nurturing our compassion and empathy. Any Forgotten, Abandoned (Abused), Lost,
Lonely, Emaciated, and Neglected animal is considered a FALLEN ANGEL. We had a very special visit from Annie, the Greyhound, during an assembly. Hearing her story gave us all a great sense of joy, knowing that as a school we have contributed to the wellness of Annie and many of the 350 other animals that live on the farm. We are so grateful for the opportunity to support such a worthy NPO. A very excited group of learners had the opportunity to drop off the dog and cat food donations that have been so generously given for the shelter, and it was a heartwarming experience. The team at Fallen Angels was overwhelmed and deeply grateful for the donations, and we could see the impact it would have on the animals in their care. We also had the chance to explore the farm, meet some of the dogs and cats, and even wash some puppies. Their cuteness and charm captivated us, and it was inspiring to witness the dedication of the Fallen Angels team in creating a safe haven for these animals. It truly was a memorable experience. We want to express our gratitude for your support and donations this quarter. We look forward to future partnerships, hoping to continue supporting Fallen Angels and encouraging others to join us in this cause. - Mrs De Aguiar and Mrs Ward DREADLOCKS STARTING NATURAL HAIR TREATMENTS +27 67 313 8581 HIGH END DREADLOCKS AND NATURAL HAIR SALON OUR SERVICES www.asanabeauty.co.za 4 GREY STREET, WOODSTOCK (WEX 1) @asanabeautycpt DREADLOCKS STYLING AND MAINTENANCE NATURAL HAIR STYLING KIDS UNDER 12 GET 15% OFF ALL OUR SERVICES BARBER SERVICES

Virtual Bake Along with Chef Kerry We wrapped up the quarter with a delightful virtual bake-along session hosted by Chef Kerry. Families joined in from their kitchens, creating scrumptious Rice Krispy treats. It was a wonderful way to connect and share the joy of baking, and we hope those treats will sweeten your holiday season! As we approach the winter break, we wish all our families a restful and joyous holiday. If you are travelling, please stay safe and enjoy your adventures. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Wednesday, 10 July, refreshed and ready for another exciting quarter. CRACKERJACKS Erin Liggett, Nadine Fourie, Shannon Marx and Chloe Mathee Our Crackerjacks have been incredibly busy during our Autumn Quarter! The fun and learning in our unit have been boundless. We are so proud of our eager learners and their enthusiasm for exploring and investigating new things. The Petting Zoo was, as always, a massive hit with both teachers and children. It was heartwarming to see how gently the Crackers handled the various animals that visited us. This visit perfectly complemented our animal themes this quarter. In the classroom, we explored wild animals, pets, farm animals, and the wonders of Autumn. Each morning, the children eagerly ran to the window to see the weather before discussing it with their teachers on the mat. We learned many delightful songs and rhymes, with PRE-PRIMARY FACULTY GRADES 0000 - R . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10 favourites like “5 Little Ducks,” “Walking in the Jungle,” and “Let’s Go to the Zoo.” Our gardens provided firsthand experiences of the beautiful changes in nature during Autumn. Little wheelbarrows were pushed around to collect the vibrantly coloured autumn leaves. It was a joy to watch the little ones jump into the leaves and toss them into the air. It was warm and cosy to come to school in our fluffy slippers and pyjamas on Slipper Day. The children loved building their own burgers and munching away happily. The Crackerjack children were thrilled to bring their teddies to school, showing their favourite stuffed friends to their classmates. They also enjoyed sipping warm hot chocolate while enjoying their yummy S'mores. We can’t believe that the second quarter is already behind us. We wish you a happy holiday break. Stay warm and safe, and we look forward to seeing you in July. GRADE 000 Ingrid Lubbe and Abigail de Witt The Tiggers and Piglets had a wonderful Autumn quarter! The quarter has been filled with learning how to care for our pets, what animals we find on a farm, the animals of the wild, what wonderful creatures we find under the sea and of course a firm favourite, dinosaurs! We started the quarter with a visit from the Petting Zoo. The children were super excited to pet and brush some of the animals with lots of giggles being heard and smiling faces seen. The bunnies and Guinea pigs were a firm favourite of the Tiggers and the Piglets. For World Book Day we had a day of dress up, showing off some of our favourite book characters! We had a visit from fairies, princesses, Bob the Builder, Spiderman, Peter Pan, Woody and lots of animals! The Tiggers and Piglets had such fun telling us about their favourite characters! One of the most loved days this quarter was Slipper Day! The little ones loved coming to school in their pyjamas and enjoyed a cosy day in class, watching a movie. This quarter, the Tiggers and Piglets also got to make their mommies and daddies feel extra loved by creating their very own Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts. On 31 May we celebrated International Children’s Day with a Teddy Bears Hot Chocolate and S’mores Day. The little ones (and teachers) all enjoyed their yummy treats out in the garden in the lovely late autumn sun. We also welcomed soft, furry and cuddly teddy to join in the school fun! This quarter we have had many first-time school experiences for our little Tiggers and Pooh Bears. We built our burgers with Chef Kerry, yummy! To add even more fun to all that took place this quarter, our Tiggers and Piglets took part in their very first school play, ‘The Enchanted Ozland’! We are so proud of all the children for putting on brave faces and singing their little hearts out! We ended our exciting quarter by hosting a cake sale and what fun it always is! They always love the opportunity to sell their yummy goodies to the rest of the Pre-Primary and of course, enjoy the yummy goodies themselves! We wish all our children and their families a happy and safe holiday. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back after the welldeserved break! GRADE 00 Lauren Medcalf and Tammy Shuttleworth The children this quarter have been busy exploring, learning, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. A highlight has been our ‘The Enchanted Ozland’ Concert where Roo's and Pooh Bear's House with the rest of the Christopher Robin Pre Primary learners in Gr 000 - Gr R, captivated all with their spectacular play, showcasing songs from the timeless classic, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and other songs. Their enthusiasm and efforts shone brightly as they sang their hearts out. It was a magical experience that highlighted their stage presence and confidence. In celebration of International Children's Day, our young learners enjoyed a delightful Teddy Bears picnic. With their favourite teddy bears in tow, the children gathered for a day filled with fun activities, delicious hot chocolate, and yummy S'mores. It was a heartwarming sight to see the children sharing stories, laughing, and making sweet memories with their cuddly companions. This quarter our curriculum took the children on an exciting journey through Space and Transport. They learned about planets, stars, rockets, and various modes of transport. The hands-on activities and interactive lessons sparked their curiosity and imagination, making learning both fun and engaging. To coincide with our Occupations theme, we had an amazing DressUp Day where the children came dressed as what they wanted to be when they grew up. From doctors and firefighters to astronauts and chefs, it was inspiring to see their aspirations and dreams come to life through their costumes. This event not only encouraged them to think about their future careers but also allowed them to express their individuality and creativity. We are incredibly proud of all learners for their hard work, enthusiasm, and vibrant spirit. Thank you, parents, for your continued support and for being an integral part of our Grade 00 group. We look forward to many more exciting adventures and learning experiences in the coming months.
GRADE R Tali Maltz, Chanay De Klerk, Carmen Wessels The Petting Zoo is such a wonderful opportunity to expose our learners to animal life and enable them to interact with cute and cuddly creatures. The children benefit tremendously from the tactile and sensory experience of touching, petting and grooming various animals, from goats to bunnies and birds to sheep. This also allows them to develop emotional resilience by overcoming their fear of animals and empathy in learning to look after creatures with sensitivity and care. World Book Day was filled with storytelling, vocabulary development and excitement. We were thrilled to welcome various dress-up characters, from Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz to superheroes. Our learners loved welcoming the Grade 6 drama learners, who narrated some of their favourite stories with such flair. We thoroughly enjoyed our two days of culinary delight, including our much anticipated "Build your own burger" day and “Hot chocolate and s'mores” day. For the first event, each learner had the opportunity to select their own ingredients to create their own hamburgers and for the second event, they were so excited to bring their teddy bears to share in the cosiness of the warm drinks and sweet treats. Our concert production of “The Enchanted Ozland” was a great success. Our children practised their songs with great enthusiasm and optimism and shone as brightly as Dorothy’s sparkling ruby slippers on stage, enthralling our audience with wonderful songs such as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “The Wizard of Oz.” It was wonderful to see the audience beam with delight and pride and even join in singing some of the well-known classics. Thank you for your support and loud applause. Wishing everyone a warm, cosy and safe holiday.
