Guidance and Career Counselling
New learner Interviews
All Grade 7 and other learners
new to Parklands College Secondary
Faculty have the opportunity to meet
with the school counsellor for a short
in person interview. During this
time the counsellor ensures that the
learners are settling in well and know
how to access the counselling and
other services on offer by the College.
Blood Donation Clinics
In partnership with the Western
Cape Blood Transfusion Service,
Parklands College Secondary Faculty
holds quarterly blood donation clinics
in the Currie Hall. The clinics are fast
becoming popular events for FET
learners, parents, and staff. Thank
you to all the donors for your support,
together we are making a difference.
Careers Expo
On 6 February the College hosted its annual Careers Expo.
More than 35 Higher Education and Training organisations
from across the country set up stalls in the Secondary Faculty
Curie Hall, providing learners and parents with invaluable
information about learner’s future careers. Apart from the
participation of well know tertiary institutions such UCT,
Stellenbosch and Rhodes Universities, this year saw new
institutions in the fields of film, advertising, design and
psychology to name but a few.
The event was well attended by all Parklands College
learners as well as learners from neighbouring schools such as
Milnerton, Tableview and Bloubergrant.
Study Skills
All learners from Grades 7 to 12 had
the opportunity to take part in a left and
right brain evaluation facilitated by Joanne
Boshell early in the autumn quarter.
Joanne then hosted a motivational study
skills seminar for parents and learners,
where she introduced some very interesting
and informative study tips and techniques.
A large group of learners from across
the grades have subsequently been taking
part in a 10-week course presented by
Joanne here at the Secondary Faculty.
Joanne empowers students to study by
teaching them a variety of left and right
brain learning techniques that involve
active rather than passive learning and
promote the full capacity of the brain while
studying.
A study skills workshop specifically for
the GET phase was also held before the
June exams. The aim of the workshop
facilitated by the school counsellor was to
assist learners to develop effective study
techniques such as organizational and time
management skills and optimal conditions
for studying. Various study methods such
as mnemonics, story telling, mind mapping
and number links were explored.
Peer Counsellors
The College has a group of experienced peer counsellors that
offer confidential support and guidance to any learners who are
experiencing academic, social or personal problems.
This year, seven very enthusiastic FET learners are taking part
in the 2013 Peer Counselling Training Programme. The training
consists of weekly sessions where basic counselling skills such
as attending, responding and reflecting are learnt and put into
practice by doing role plays and other hands on activities. As part
of the course the trainees
attend a fun and interactive
personal growth workshop
that consists of numerous
self-development and team
building activities.
The current intern
counsellors have been putting
their skills into practice by
offering guidance and support
to fellow peers, taking part in
a buddy system for the new
Grade 8 learners and helping
with awareness campaigns.
Counselling and
Career Guidance
The counselling and career guidance
department provides a multitude of
developmental as well as pro-active,
preventative and support services to
promote the holistic development of
all the learners at the College.
