Quarter 4 Newsletter 2021
6 We have been pleased that sports has been able to resume and we have hosted a few cricket matches this quarter. We welcomed parents, under strict Covid protocols, as spectators to our Saturday matches. Our Grade 4 and 5 classes ended the quarter with a superb sports day with a twist. Their day was filled with a variety of activities from various teachers. Miss Hartley hosted a calming yoga session whilst Miss Rühl raised energy levels with a fast paced Zumba workout. Mrs Holliday hosted a high intensity session that involved burpees and bear crawls and Coach Viljoen taught everyone the game of Duster Hockey. Miss Hattingh cooled everyone off in the pool with aqua aerobics and a quick swim. A special thank you to all our teachers for hosting such fun activities in our last full week of school. We are certain everyone slept well that evening! A CULTURAL ADVENTURE A SPORTING ADVENTURE §Our Culture Department leapt into the fourth quarter with the news that our Art Department received the Cape Town Eisteddfod Ford Rose Bowl for the second concurrent year, achieving the most Diplomas and category winners in the Eisteddfod. We are extremely proud of all of our very talented artists. Thank you to Ms Hartley and Mrs Putter for their guidance and encouragement. Our dancers entered the ISTD Modern and Tap examinations and received outstanding results, with many Diplomas coming our way. We are still awaiting the results of the RAD Ballet examinations and the recent various Medal Tests, but we are confident that the results will be very favourable. Our dancers all looked very poised and confident and we are extremely grateful to our dance educators for their dedication and passion. Our Music Department continues to grow, and this quarter we had two learners starting to learn the double bass. With this new addition, we hope to grow our ‘Jazz’ instruments even further next year. We continued to enter the Trinity Music practical and theory examinations, achieving twelve more Distinctions, taking our total to thirty four distinctions for the year - a wonderful achievement for our music learners and educators. We have had a record number of musicians entertaining us this quarter, not only in Assembly, but in the car park too! We hope that we’ll have many more public Marimba performances. Our Grade Six Awards morning featured our Grade Six Marimba Band, a Grade Six Orchestral Ensemble as well as a Grade Six Jazz Band. We wish these talented learners all the best as they transition to the Secondary Faculty and we’ll watch their progress in the Music Department with interest and pride. The learners also had immense fun in their class music lessons, with the Grade Fours begging to do more ‘body percussion’ to their favourite sing-a- long tunes. The highlight of the quarter was the Grade Six Recycled Fashion Show. This recycled fashion show started as a question to the Grade Sixes - What is your legacy? Meaning- how will you be remembered at the Preparatory School? Will you be remembered as a Creative Agent, a Purposeful Collaborator, an Effective Communicator? The Grade Sixes were tasked with deciding on a theme - either something from a historical fashion period or something that had inspired them. They then needed to decide how to represent this theme as an item to wear, using found objects and recycled material. They also had to create or find music suited to the theme and be able to explain this to their audience. What a finale to the quarter! The learners rose to the occasion, designing interesting items and presenting them with confidence. The audience enjoyed the interaction and the day ended with a performance by Mrs Sampi on Vocals and Mrs Du Plessis on Saxophone. A fantastic ending to a busy, exciting quarter. Thank you to our Creative ‘Cast’ of educators in our Culture Department, who continue to nurture, guide and encourage our learners to explore and find their passion.
