Quarter 2 Newsletter June 2019

5 Westhuizen, Tarryn Baines, Candrine Atkins & Suné Bloem Managers: Daniella da Camara, Ivanna Chetty, Petro Bester, Ceri Marillier, Thabisa Ntsadu & Mia Esterhuizen Cross Country Cross county has grown from strength to strength and we are delighted that many more athletes are partaking, in the Western Province Northern Zone League, on a weekly basis. For many of our athletes, this has been the first time they have been exposed to more competitive running and it is clear that their confidence has grown throughout the season. Our top runners, Christine Greig (Grade 10) and Deon Bochnig (Grade 9), have held onto their top 10 rankings in the League and we are confident that they will be invited to the Western Province trials. Coaches: Elmarie Randewyk & Don Duffield Manager: Elamrie Randewyk & Marc Viljoen Chess With our vision to diversify our sport at the College, we have introduced Chess. Shane Loseby, Coach, entered a senior team into the Western Province league. Under the captaincy of Chris Boshoff, the team performed well; and we are eager to see this young team perform in the coming years. Chris Boshoff is to be commended on being selected to represent the U/16 Western Province team at the National Championships in Gauteng in January 2020. Coach: Shane Loseby Managers: Shane Loseby & Andri Hayward Boys Soccer This year saw a record number of learners signing up for soccer and the players showed true commitment. There were many highlights but the 1st team result against Elkanah 0 – 6 Parklands College must be the greatest highlight! Coaches: Fives Futbol, Daniel Stein, Fortune Mthethwa & Storme Breeze Managers: Chanelle Conlon, Ben Stishi, Marcel Erasmus, Fred Bredell & Jolandi Gibson Girls Soccer Girls soccer has grown from strength to strength and as the season progressed the teams consolidated and played exciting soccer; the highlight being the U/19 match against Elkanah 0 – 6 Parklands. Coaches: Fives Futbol Managers: Jessica Herbert, Jessica Biermann, Keith John Hockey The girls were dedicated and committed to their training and achieved some excellent results. The U/16 team is skilled and there are many talented individuals in the team. Personal highlight was the inclusion of Katia Leca (Grade 8) into the Western Province North team. Coaches: Rodwin De Klerk, Samantha Scott & Franklin Human Managers: Mariska Venter, Prinevin Vardan & Anette Rossouw Under 13 League With our intention of growing our sporting programme, we introduced U/13 teams to all of our sporting codes. To introduce ourselves to our neighbouring schools, we hosted a Northern District Softball Tournament followed by the Western Province Primary School Rugby Trials, which were both successful. Our teams have performed very well and the talent witnessed, by our learners, bodes well for the future. The winter season was a huge success for the College. We had over 480 learners signing up for winter sport, and most teams had an exceptional season. Our junior teams are improving and we now have an excellent base to work from in 2020. We participated in more festivals and tournaments this year, competing against higher level opposition. We commend all our learners who have made the Provincial teams. Finally, we are resolute in our vision to grow sport even further; becoming the school of choice on the West Coast. With the continued dedication and commitment from educators, learners and parents we are on our way to achieving this. Thanersen Pillay: Head of Sport OUTREACH The quarter started off with a bang, as some Interact members spent the first weekend of the Autumn Quarter at the annual Blouberg Rotary Interact camp in Stanford. Upon arrival at the Gecko Wortelgat Bush Camp, they were welcomed by a familiar face, Mr Oberholzer, who was the camp coordinator. Thereafter they got into smaller groups where they worked with Interactors from Curro Century City to come up with a viable and sustainable project on Water and Sanitation. Activities ranged from pitching project ideas to exploring the aspect of Service above Self in the bigger Rotary Community. It was truly an unforgettable weekend filled with lots of laughter, team building activities – such as bonfire nights, crucial life lessons, kayaking, rock climbing, stalking the lantern, interesting Italian chips, failed pranks and making lifelong friendships. All of these culminated in them agreeing on a collaborative outreach project in the community. On 3 May the Interact Club had the opportunity to visit Vaatjie Primary School, the learners for whom they had previously made food parcels for their outing to the Waterfront. However, this time they read to them and with them. This will be done on an ongoing basis as part of the Literacy Initiative run by Rotary Blouberg. The Vaatjie learners were also treated with a surprise of marshmallow eggs. Herewith is Darushen Pillay’s experience from this eye-opening outing. This is a journey I will never forget. On Friday, 3 May, Interact visited Vaatjie Primary. I chose to work with Grade 2, and it was an absolute blast. The kids seemed to really enjoy themselves and were hooked and engaged with what we were reading. At the end we let them read to us. At the end of the day we felt like we had made a special bond with all the kids. It was so sad to leave, but I hope to visit again soon. On 10 May Interact supported the annual Reach for A Dream Slipper day with the help of the entire school. It turned out to be quite a competitive event with classes challenging one another and Mrs Steyn challenging us even more. At the end of it all, the high school alone raised an astounding R5152. A mere week after a very successful Slipper Day, Mindful Living and Interact hosted a collaborative cake sale where everything from cupcakes to peanut butter bars were for sale. It was heartwarming to see the school chip in and purchase these delicious home-baked goods, with Interact raising R1721.10, which will go towards funding future projects. Mindful Living raised R761.80 which was donated to Blake Pittaway’s Project 18. Interact would like to thank everyone who donated marshmallow eggs. Interactors Emily- Grace Prince and Sandhya Naidoo went out of their way to personally distribute some of these marshmallow eggs to the residents at Huis Zonnekus Old Age home. Unfortunately, our plan to participate in a marshmallow egg hunt at Durbanville children’s home did not take place due to very tragic unforeseen circumstances, however the remaining eggs will be used in projects to come. To conclude this eventful quarter, Interact Committee members Courtney, Bathi, Kaylee and Mwenda were invited to attend the Blouberg Rotary Youth Event, an event hosted and organised by the Interact Club Presidents and Vice-Presidents in the Blouberg region. It was a night filled with RYLA camp reflections, awards presentations and delicious food. Christine Greig performed a beautiful piece on the flute to a very appreciative audience. The Committee would like to thank Mrs Smïd for her continuous guidance and for being so passionate about giving back to our community. Thank you also to everyone who has contributed to Interact and thus making a difference. We are looking forward to an amazing August Awareness month!
