Dance Our three Grade 12 dancers, Tiffany Schrauwen, Adrienne Tonkin and Eden Van der Watt were awarded Distinctions for their mesmerizing and innovative choreography, Dark Deeds by an external examining panel from the WCED. The tiny budding dancers in the Pre- Primary faculty participated in the May Play, and for many dancers this was their first time on stage. Congratulations to Isabella Fourie, a Grade 9 dance learner, who was awarded a Ballet scholarship from the American Academy of Ballet to attend the Summer School of Excellence in New York, from 23 – 29 June 2019. Isabella will be attending classes with many other aspiring young dancers from 16 different countries. We wish Isabella all the best and hope she will return from New York inspired, confident and with enhanced artistry. Art & Design With each passing year, the Art and Design departments continue to grow and flourish. This year the learners have exhibited incredible enthusiasm, creativity and a desire to improve. The Grade 7 and 8 learners have enjoyed working with patterns, colours, recycled materials and messy, very messy, paint! The Grade 9 art learners have been sharpening their drawing skills by executing traditional portraits and still life sketches. The Grade 10 and 11 learners continue their exploration of project-based learning. This is an important time for them to learn how to set realistic goals, plan properly, execute an idea and reflect on the process. The learners are clearly up for the challenge as the learners’ creative skills seem to be increasing at an exponential rate. The Grade 12 Visual Art and Design learners are working steadily towards their end of year exhibition. The end of year exhibition is essentially the materialisation of three years of creative practice. All this hard work has not been without a few treats. The FET Visual Art and Design learners have enjoyed inspiring trips to the Two Oceans Aquarium, the Cape Town Art Fair and the Norval Foundation Art museum in Steenberg. In conclusion, Culture is alive and thriving at the College. Thank you to all the dedicated educators and learners in the department who strive to uphold the reputation of excellence in creativity and who give so generously of themselves and their talents to the College. Catherine Dodders – Head of Culture SPORT The winter sport season started early in November last year in preparation for our first International tour to Ireland and our, now, traditional trip to George for the annual Southern Cape Sport Tour. Festivals such as the West Coast Festival, Table View Under 14 Sports Day and the Bosmansdam Netball Festival was perfect pre-training for the teams. A total of 113 learners and educators; inclusive of the 1st and U/16 Rugby; Netball and Hockey teams toured and did Parklands College proud. Both boys and girls soccer had record numbers this year which shows the love for the “beautiful game”. All teams performed well and this is bodes well for the development of soccer at the College. Rugby The tours enabled our learners to come together as a squad and, with true determination, won many matches, during the season against higher level opposition. The highlights for the year, were the invitations by Paarl Boys High; Rondebosch and Paarl Gymnasium proving that Parklands College is held in high regard with our recent performances. We are extremely proud to announce that Shane Rosslind (Grade 12) has been selected for the Western Province Academy team; whilst Kelvin Sadia (Grade 9) has been selected for the U/15 team. Shane’s selection has ensured that, for the past 5 years, a Parklands College rugby player has made a Provincial team. This is a true testament to our commitment towards expanding our rugby programme. We are aiming to improve this by progressing further into a higher league. We entered nine teams, and our youngsters are already better equipped for the years to come. Personal achievement goes to Unam Gida (Grade 11) and Chantel Myburgh (Grade 8) who both made the Cape Town High School Team. Final selection for the Western Province teams will be held during the winter holidays and we are confident that they will be successful in their inclusion. Coaches: Rachel Manyathi, Charlene vd
