Quarter 3 Newsletter 2022
9 Grade 5 Robotics formed part of a project based learning opportunity where the learners used Minecraft Education to explore the ancient Egyptian civilization and then build their own pyramids and tombs. Using the Minecraft interface the learners also developed coding and digital citizenship skills. In Grade 6 the learners thoroughly enjoyed using the Lego Spike Prime kits to build and design. They then used these creations to code, line follow and solve problems such as weather detection and exercise counters. This quarter saw the World Robotics teams participate in the Western Cape Regional competitions. Five teams participated in the Robo Mission Elementary category. We were very proud that these teams placed in 1st to 5th positions and therefore received invitations to compete at the national event in Gauteng. We also participated in the Future Innovators category where three grade 5 girls looked at problems in South Africa and came up with an amazing solution to 3 problems in rural areas, namely water and medical supplies delivery and also delivery of water during a fire crisis. This team has also been invited to present their project to the National judges in Gauteng. We wish all these teams the best of luck. SPORT Our young athletes have been kept very busy during the Winter Quarter, with our main focus being on the soccer and hockey fields. Our hockey girls faced some strong competition in the local league. The girls impressed with good performances and pulled off hard fought wins against tough opposition. We were also pleased with opportunities to give our Grade 2 girls exposure at local hockey festivals. In total Parklands College had nine soccer teams registered in the local league. All of our teams showed tremendous growth throughout the season. Our U/11 and U/12 teams were able to test their skill at the annual Curro Century City Fives Tournament. Both teams played well in tricky wet conditions, with the U/11 team losing in the semi-final. The Winter Quarter also saw our rugby and netball programmes for the Grade 6 learners come to an end. Both of these teams have shown great development through the year. Our U/12 netball team has been practising since January, when they were preparing for their preseason tour. The U/13 rugby team finished off their season with a fantastic game against Sweet Valley, where they were seconds away from pulling off a come-from-behind win! The start of the Spring Quarter sees the return of Water Polo, Cricket, and Softball. The Preparatory Faculty will also be welcoming Laurie Ward as the Head of Cricket. We look forward to Laurie joining our team and taking cricket to the next level. We continued to support Kerria Primary by growing their library and filling their shelves. We also supported them through a collection of much needed toiletries for learners who have been invited on sports tours and camps. Once again we say thank you to all our parents and learners for their generous donations of books and toiletries for Kerria Primary. They were excited to stock their library and add the toiletries to their "care" cupboard for learners. OUTREACH
