Quarter 3 Newsletter 2022

7 class and school to take a mental maths quiz in real time. We also had fun building shapes to investigate and draw the different views of shapes. The Grade 5’s also learned about different self-management skills in Life Skills. We watched various videos and thought critically about what it means to have good time-management skills, being organised and having a growth mindset. We also discovered different study methods that can be used. The values of reaching outwards, growing minds and building futures have definitely filtered through Life Skills this quarter. What a quarter it has been! We look forward to the final adventures of Grade 5 2022. Every adventure requires a first step. - Cheshire Cat Parklands College is more than just a place of education, it also provides a platform for learners to be aware of diversity and strive to become global achievers. For the Grade Six learners, quarter three has been an eventful journey. Learners have been challenged in so many ways and there have been some great success stories. We are proud of the progress that each one has made, whether in academics, the cultural sphere, socially or emotionally. The laughter and buzz of children could be heard in the corridors as they prepared to celebrate our rich and diverse cultures. The additional languages week was thoroughly enjoyed by the Grade 6 learners and ensured a whirlwind of fun during the quarter. We explored different foods in both Afrikaans and IsiXhosa. Our learners had a fabulous time illustrating and learning the new vocabulary that went along with it. Rainforests: wild, unexplored and full of adventure, but beware, they are dangerous too! Survival in a rainforest is not for the faint-hearted. Our Grade Six learners got the opportunity to explore different rainforests across our globe. They explored the different landforms and structures in a rainforest, finding out what weird and wonderful creatures live there. They also reflected on our coexistence, while sharing their thoughts on whether we are failing or succeeding as a human race. A survival guide was compiled in the end to inform those who are brave enough to venture into the forests, on what they would need to know and how to survive. Grade Six learners concluded Science Expo 2022 with wonderful submissions. Ten of our budding young scientists took part in this year's Regional Science Expo at Herzlia High School and impressed the judges with their innovative research and interesting project ideas. Six of the projects were awarded medals and we were proud to announce Bronze medals for Mia Joubert, Cruz Sun, Phoenix Srdic, Veer Atwaru and Ethan Wust. Silver medals were won by Clara-Marie Vosloo and Lara Smit for their project. We also congratulate these learners for winning special awards for best projects in their relative categories. During this busy quarter the Grade Six learners learnt about electricity and circuits and the negative impact of fossil fuel usage. They enjoyed various practical investigations and creating their very own circuit quiz boards to test their peers. GRADE SIX We’ve had a wonderful end to this quarter, as we shared about our beloved pets in both isiXhosa and Afrikaans, family recipes in Life Skills and pictures in Morning Connect of us reading to someone we love, in crazy outfits and with exotic backgrounds. Quarter three was a wonderful adventure for our brave Grade Fours. Our quarter started with an exciting outing to a museum where we learnt all about Ancient Egypt. This introduced our Project Based Learning (PBL) for Quarter three where we dived into all things Egypt. At the end of the project, we shared our knowledge through a presentation to the class. As part of the PBL the Grade 5’s started their Minecraft journey. In Robotics, learners learnt how to play the game and how to code agents within the game. In our LIT lessons, we focused on learning all about Ancient Egypt in a virtual “Egyptian” world. We also learnt how to read map coordinates and discussed the weather, all inside our virtual world. Learners were challenged to create their own civilization to share their knowledge. They put together a video walkthrough to share with the class. We are so excited and cannot wait for the final products. The Grade 5’s thoroughly enjoyed reading The White Giraffe and have even started a new book. In celebration of Roald Dahl’s birthday we are reading one of his famous books: Boy - Tales of Childhood. The learners worked on an exciting creative writing project where they described an Egyptian adventure, using the knowledge they have learnt in History. Three words to describe this quarter in English would be: enthusiasm, diligence and curiosity! During Afrikaans lessons, the Grade 5’s have focused on speaking and writing. They were challenged with a writing project to enter into a competition. To start they had to conduct research and answer questions about poems and how to write them. Next they were required to plan and write their own poem. Lastly they prepared and presented an oral in which they told the class about their poem and why they chose their particular theme. Throughout the quarter we learnt new vocabulary through a “Word of the Day”. Learners were encouraged to use these new words in their writing and speaking. In Mathematics lessons, the learners worked diligently in their Number Sense books and are working towards mastering the “Column Method”. We started enjoying a new Mathematics application where students are encouraged to complete tasks which earn them points to use in a digital world called “Meritopia.” They can even challenge other learners in the GRADE FIVE
