Quarter 2 Newsletter 2022
4 SOCCER In the boys’ soccer, our U14 boys went undefeated and played some fantastic soccer, scoring 12 goals and not conceding any along the way. Our girls soccer is also on the rise, with the girls getting some good results against the more fancied soccer schools - a noticeable result was our U15 girls team beating CBC 3-2. BOYS HOCKEY Although boys hockey is still a new sporting code at the College, we are very excited to see that the numbers increase every year. The match that stood out in boys’ hockey during quarter 2 was the match of Parklands College U19 team vs CBC St. John’s. The match started with great intensity. Our players were fully committed, getting behind every movement of the ball and did extremely well to defend as well as the attack. We were very fortunate to have an excellent goalie who kept CBC at bay on many of their attacks. It was a very intense and exciting match to witness as Parklands went at CBC full throttle. Parklands lead the match by 2 - 0 at the end of the match. In the end they won the match by 2 - 1 after a nail biting last 15 minutes. We are very proud of these boys as they showed good character and their fighting spirit as a team was amazing. We are looking forward to more matches in quarter 3. GIRLS HOCKEY The U16 girls hockey team were very excited to finally be presented with the opportunity to play a home game this half of the season against Melkbos High School. The team has been working on structural play and they have been working together as a team throughout the first half of the season. They always look forward to putting our training to the test in the match fixtures. The Parklands team started strong with some great team play allowing us to slot in two goals by the halfway mark. Unfortunately, Melkbos’ team had an inspiring half time talk and caught us slightly unaware and on the back foot by slotting in two goals within 5 minutes at the start of the second half. We fought back and camped in their half for the remainder of the second half, desperate to slot in one more goal! The U16 girls showed their big match temperament, the importance of playing until the final whistle when they scored a beautiful team goal in the last minute of the game to win 3 - 2. The team is excited to keep working on their hockey and continue to improve and play good hockey in the 2nd half of the season. The team can be commended for commitment and playing well together as a team. NETBALL After a very long wait to have normal league fixtures for this netball season ahead, we were very excited to get on with our first matches. The first scheduled matches were against Fairbairn College. This was an excellent start to the season as we had fair competition on that day. The match that stood out was the U19A match. They were head-to-head for the first 3 quarters and in the fourth quarter they really pulled out all the stops and did what they do so well and that is to stand together and play together as one. Their communication was on point, their discipline was admirable, they corrected their mistakes almost immediately and their positive attitude got all the spectators on their feet. They won with a score of 29 - 18. They did Parklands so proud. We are excited to pick-up the league in quarter 3 again. All the girls were excited to start the season, I have no doubt that we will finish strong at the end of the season. Mrs Smïd has been involved with Interact and any outreach activities at the College for almost two decades. Even from her sickbed she organised collections and donations to those in need. In her honour, we asked people to donate books and games for Vaatjie Primary School, a school that was close to her heart. She was leading a literacy programme at the school and many of our learners have had the privilege of visiting the school and reading to the children. SERVICE Netball Girls Soccer Girls Hockey Interact We are very proud of the Parklands College Interact Club, who along with Milnerton High scooped the Rotary District 9350 Interact Awards for Best Projects 2021/2022. This is no mean feat as the District 9350 stretches from Angola, Namibia, West Coast, Cape Town, Knysna to Plettenberg Bay. Blouberg Rotary acknowledged Parklands Interact the Vaatjie Literacy Programme they have been running since last year. Not only did they collect books for the library, but our learners visited the school on a number of occasions to read to the children.
