Quarter 1 Newsletter 2022
3 The House Captains have been busy with organising a number of Inter- house events throughout the Summer Quarter. We have enjoyed the Big Brag, Spelling Bee and Swimming Gala and look forward to the upcoming House Plays. Who will win the trophy this year? Congratulations to everyone who was acknowledged. Our guest speaker was past learner, Kathleen Kehoe, who is currently studying towards her PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She reminded us that life may take you on a different path from the one you imagined and that it is worth celebrating the journey. COLLEGE HONOURS The highest accolade anyone can receive, is to be awarded College Honours. Candidates for College Honours must have achieved Colours in at least FOUR of the following six spheres recognised in 2021: Academics, Sport, Culture, Technology, Service and/or Leadership. Congratulations to Carlo Bochnig, Brooke Elliott and Jessica Pillay on this outstanding achievement. LEARNER LEADERSHIP BITS REP TRAINING There are plenty of opportunities for learners to build on their leadership skills and to give back to the College, e.g. serving as a Class Representative, as a member of the Learner and Equity Council, as a BITS Representative (assisting learners in class with technology), as a Chairperson of a Club or Society as a Sports Captain, a House Captain or a Prefect. Many of our young leaders welcomed the learners new to the College at the beginning of the year, by assisting with device training ahead of the school opening for the start of the Summer Quarter. 2022 NEW LEARNER DEVICE TRAINING Grade 12 learners volunteer to act as buddies to the Grade 7s joining high school. They’ve enjoyed a number of fun activities together. They also trained our Learner Equity Council Representatives from each grade to take a more active role in our campaigns. February was spent enlightening the school about Black History month as well as a wonderful celebration of the various languages at out school on Mother Tongue Day, while in March we involved the whole school by wearing purple ribbons on International Women’s Day. The Summer Quarter finished with an impressive early celebration of Human Rights Day, with guest speakers, musical performances and our annual Freedom Bell ceremony. Grade 7 Buddy Connect
