AQUATICS Parklands College hosted a very successful u/19 Water Polo Festival for boys and girls at the start of the quarter. It set the tone for a good Spring Season. All our teams our constantly improving and look forward to the start of the Summer Season. We will once again be travelling to Knysna in February 2020 for the annual Oakhill Chukka Festival. Our swimmers have performed well in the couple of galas we could fit into this short season. Many of our swimmers have achieved exceptional individual milestones and results. Swimming can be a very lonely sport with many hours alone in the water, so we honour them all for their commitment. HOME OF HOPE CLEAN-UP During the severe storms that hit Cape Town in October, a roof was damaged at the Home of Hope, a shelter of abused women and children. The playroom was severely damaged when the ceiling dropped down. Members of the Intearct club came to the rescue to clean up the mess and leave the room a little brighter than it had been before! BEACH CLEANUP As part of Interact Week in November, Interactors got together to clean the beach, starting from Woodbridge Island, hoping to finish at Sunset Links. However, the beach was so polluted that they never got much further than the start. It was a huge eye-opener for all involved. PINK & BLUE DRIVE – October and November Our newly elected Service Prefects, Kaylee Musikanth and Cayley Hefer, teamed up with the Equity and Diversity Prefects, Bathi May and Amber Taylor to create Breast Cancer Awareness on October and Prostate Cancer Awareness on November. Through the sale of ribbons a number of cake sales, they raised much needed funds for CANSA to continue the work they do in prevention and education of these common cancers. The #iloveboobies drive, who sell socks to raise funds for free screenings for women in rural areas, sold enough merchandise on our campus to screen 10 under-privileged women in October. MATRIC CHARITIES Every year the Matrics decide on a charity to support, as they raise money for their matric fund. This year they decided to support two charities, in dire need of help. This month, as they were finishing their final exams, they were able to pay R5000 each to the following two places of care: Luthando Orphanage and Child Care is a home for vulnerable children who are orphaned, abandoned or neglected from the DuNoon community. Nobuntu Early Childhood Centre operates out of two containers and have around 70 children in the tiniest of space. They are situated in an area called Witsand in Atlantis. The Matrics are really happy to contribute to making this holiday season just a tiny bit better for the children in these two places.
