We launched August Awareness month with the Service Assembly led by the Service Prefects. They led a fun interactive assembly, where they reminded the school of Rotary’s main areas of focus and highlighted the importance of service. Christine Greig, a recently nominated Paul Harris Fellow, was the inspiration behind this. The Interact Committee gave feedback regarding the projects we have been involved in over the last quarter and then launched the two initiatives for the month. The first week was dedicated to a drive to collect Colouring Books and crayons to create care parcels for One2One. The next 3 weeks were dedicated to collecting ingredients and wrapping Buddy Boxes for Vaatjie Primary School. Students were asked to make care boxes including items like sweets, clothes, toys, essentials and a little note. We delivered over 30 boxes to the principal of Vaatjie Primary on 20 September, and would like to thank everyone who donated. We also honoured our Interna- tional commitments by collaborating with other Interact committees from around the world via Zoom, playing games and bonding over the common interest of Service about Self. This gave us much insight into service around the world. The month of August, also being Women’s Month, was jam-packed with individual initiatives reaching out to women specifically and those less privileged. We are very grateful to the Park - lands family once again for reaching outwards to impact lives. PREPARATORY faculty Reaching Outwards and supporting others is part of the Parklands College ethos. We value the important life lessons our learners are ex- posed to when working with the community and helping those in need. The Preparatory Faculty has worked closely with West Riding Primary this year to ensure that the learners in their care have been nurtured and cared for and that the staff feel valued and have a sense of commu- nity. As a way of saying THANK YOU to all the teach- ers at West Riding Primary School and Marconi Beam Primary for their dedication to the learn- ers in their care, we collected and created little wellness packages of coffee sachets, wrapped cookies, small chocolate bars and breakfast bis- cuits. Teachers were able to snack on these dur- ing their well deserved break in the staff room. Reach for Dream has had a difficult Covid year and had many of their sponsored events such as Slipper Day cancelled. The Preparatory Faculty reached out to them and asked how we could support them during quarter two. We were able to focus on the three different areas, the children’s dream requests, Slipper Day and snack packs. Reach for a Dream (RFAD) sent us their “dreams” list and we requested items from families for donations. A BIG thank you to those families who were able to make a dream come true. We then hosted a Slipper Day which resulted in many happy faces when viewing the array of slippers. We collected an amazing R5300. We ended our Reach for a Dream col- Rotary Peace Project Let there be Peace on earth, and let it begin with each one of us. This is the mantra for the Rotarian’s Promote Peace in Schools and Communities Project. Blouberg Rotary Club (our mother club) has been officially inducted as a RI (Ro - tary International) Peacebuilders Club. The second in SA and the first in District 9350. The Parklands Interact Club has been fortunate enough to be invited to participate in the Project.. This project aims to create peace in and amongst the members of our schools and communities. It will run from February 2021 – January 2022. This Is What Peace Means To Us As one of the requirements of the 2021/2022 Rotary Peace Project, the Interact Peace Committee had to create a short film. We began our movie-making at the beginning of Au - gust. The theme for this short film is, What does peace mean to us? We set about exploring the deeper meaning be - hind what peace truly means to the members of our school. Our Peace Committee decided to go with a subtheme of, Peace through the Ages, and included Christopher Robin Pre-Primary learners as well as the Secondary Faculty High School Learners in our film. We got to explore working with drones, editing, greenscreens, lighting, and got the wonder- ful opportunity to draw and interact with the Pre-Primary learners. We have realised that when we are young, we know little about conflict and wars and see peace in rainbows and uni - corns and as friendship, love and kindness, however, as we grow up, we are exposed to the issues of our world and un- derstand that peace is not achieved as simply as we think it can be. Our focus is to show how one’s idea about peace slowly develops and changes with time. Making this film was a very exciting journey for our committee for which we are grateful. Along with our Short Story and Peace Poem. If all goes well it may be featured at the United Nations in 2022! Let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with each one of us. Watch our Peace Film
