176 | Edition No. 24 | 2021 SECONDARY faculty The Summer Quarter started with us making Care Pack - ages for essential workers. Due to the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases, the infrastructure at Milnerton Medi- clinic was under immense pressure. As a token of our appreciation for their efforts under very challenging cir- cumstances, we assisted the Change Makers Hub by do- nating care packages for the health care workers to say thank you for their continuous commitment and bravery. Each package contained goodies for their coffee break, something for tired hands and a note of encouragement. Due to COVID-19, many people have not been able to see their loved ones. This is particularly an issue for the elderly in care homes. To address this problem, we intro- duced Zoom calls with the residents of Huis Zonnekus. These calls were done twice a week and our aim was to bring a smile to their faces in this very tough year. Many stories and laughter were shared and we look forward to continuing this relationship with Huis Zonnekus. In February, we were given the opportunity to celebrate Flip Flop Day, an event hosted annually by the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa. This Foundation aims to save lives through early detection and providing aid to children who have cancer or other blood diseases. They are a non-profit organisation that runs on donations and compassion, so on 12 February next year, get ready to have a heart and wear a sole. Our club also took part in three Beach Clean Ups this quarter and walked rescued dogs for the WOW project. We also baked and iced cookies for the children of the Peace Home Safe House, which is a home for victims of abuse. We began the Autumn quarter by collecting blankets for our four-legged friends at the Wolwerivier Outreach Project, and collaborated with Green Solutions in a few beach clean-ups. Tragedy struck when the devastating Table Mountain fires occurred and the Interact Club held an emergency water and snacks collection for the fire - fighters, who bravely put out the fires. In celebration of Earth Day we held a bake sale where we sold green sweets and ice-lollies to raise funds for the SPCA, to help treat the animals who were injured in the fires.
