Magazine 2017

CULTURE Prefects: Aza Mbovane, Zintle Mayaphi, Lindsay Friday We kick-started the year with auditions for our upcoming production, Alice in Wonderland , and our announcement of the cast list! Throughout the term we celebrated both Xhosa Week and Afrikaans Week, in which we danced, listened to music, and celebrated the cultures across South Africa. The Parklands College Festival of Music was a large event on our calendar, and proved to be very successful, with our orchestra joining with other schools and the Inkwe’nkwezi Choir performing too. Quarter Two started off with our Jazz Band embarking on tour. The band performed at schools around Somerset West, the highlight of their tour being their performance at the Backsberg Wine Estate. The music department also hosted a cross-faculty concert called Majors & Minors in May , showcasing talents from Grades 1 and up! It was a huge success. On the 25th May, before the June examinations, we celebrated with an entertaining utility concert composed of vernacular speeches, singing and dancing. During the Winter Quarter, Parklands presented the long awaited four-dimensional production of Alice in Wonderland , under the brilliant direction of none other than our fearless head of the Culture Department, Mrs Dodders. Despite the months of preparation for the show, the cast was still curious to embark on the journey of performing in such an extraordinary show. The cast, crew and orchestra bonded incredibly well and showed intense work ethic, drive and open-mindedness during the process. We ended off the Third Quarter with a fun filled day - our first ever Parkfest! Families and friends gathered to enjoy the day whilst watching rugby games, war cries, the talent show, performances from the Rock and Jazz bands as well as visiting apprentice and food stands, face painting and much more. Leaving with smiling faces, it can be said that it was a great day for the Parklands Family. HOUSES Prefects in charge of Houses: Niamh Moriarty & Brittany Orlik While the Prefects in charge of Houses are involved in events that overlap with other disciplines, especially Sport, the Winter Quarter was dominated by preparations for the Inter-house House Plays. The various House Captains were tasked with spending hours preparing scripts, identifying talent, organising rehearsals and marketing their creations. Congratulations to all the House Captains for their efforts. LEARNER AFFAIRS Prefects in charge of Learner Affairs: Yasmin Ebrahim,  Katlego Lucas & Samuel Iduh This year, the new learner buddy system was initiated. A dedicated group of grade 11’s volunteered to help new learners (Grades 7 - 12) find their feet at the College. This buddy system was a great success and we hope to see this system continue in the future. The Learner Affairs portfolio serves as the main source of communication between the learners and the Prefects, as well as the school body; the class representatives. Our class representative training sessions were a great success, starting off with icebreakers and then moving onto equipping the class representatives with knowledge, specific duties and responsibilities. Games were played enhancing aspects of leadership and equipped the learners to balance their lives as class representatives. Some of the highlights of the first and second class representative training sessions were: the Prefect of Academics, Kayla Tromp, giving a very beneficial speech on balancing academics and being a class representative and our Head Boy, Connor Fick, giving the class representatives an incredible speech about what it means to be a leader. BEING A PREFECT AT PARKLANDS COLLEGE IS MORE THAN A RESPONSIBILITY; IT IS A PRIVILEGE. 155 www.parklands.co.za
