PREFECT CAMP The Grade 11s in 2016 all applied for certain portfolios and at last year’s Awards Evening individuals were appointed to specific portfolios. Once all the Prefects in charge of the various portfolios were identified the entire Prefect Body went on Prefect Camp where they planned the various tasks and events that lay ahead of them. ACADEMICS Prefect: Kayla Tromp 2017 saw the introduction of a new portfolio - that of Academics. Kayla Tromp, the first Prefect in charge of Academics, started off speaking at the Grade 11 Information Evening, where the Grade 11s were told what they could expect the year to be like and were given some tips on how to stay on TOP of things. The following week was the Matric Information Evening, where both parents and teachers were given a few tips and tricks on how to survive Matric by the guest speaker. A lovely addition to the evening was having Mrs Nesbitt, a past Matric learner’s mother, come and give the Matric parents some advice. The annual Careers Expo was also a major success and learners were able to find out more about the career fields they want to pursue someday. Kayla also set up a peer tutoring system, in which learners are able to receive academic assistance from their peers in the new breakaway venues. TheAutumnQuarter startedoff with thealways exciting, annual Science Week and included a Radio Astronomy Lecture, a visit to the UCT Drug Development Research Centre, an exciting lecture on the Evolution of Avatars on Pandora as well as a very interesting presentation on The Science of Supply Chain Management. GET learners wrote the the annual Natural Science Olympiad and the second round of the Maths Olympiad was held at UCT. At the start of Winter quarter, we were informed that Emile Tredoux represented South Africa and Parklands College at the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, where he did extremely well and obtained a bronze medal! Emile was also placed in the top 10 of the National SA Maths Competition. Along with the first Parklands’ Maths Week, our first ever ParkFest also showed off our Parkies’ amazing academic skills at the Maths challenge and General Knowledge quiz. While the school identified a need for this new portfolio, Kayla certainly made it fly. CLUBS & SOCIETIES Prefects: Ashley Minshall & Ben Fisher On the 20th January 2017, the clubs and societies portfolio organised their assembly where all of the school's clubs and societies had the opportunity to showcase what they had in store for the year ahead. From MakerSpace to Table Tennis, over 30 representatives from each club spoke briefly on what their club had to offer. After all the presentations were finished, learners were sent an online signup sheet where they could fill in their details and plan for their exciting year ahead whilst being involved in clubs. After the signups concluded, we were proud to see that the number of overall students participating in clubs and societies had substantially risen when compared to past years. With the addition of new clubs such as: FPV club, Green Solutions and MakerSpace, we've seen the portfolio grow and the number of students involved in clubs and societies increase.
