Quarter 4 Newsletter 2022
6 The highlights for the Quarter included the visit from the “Dog-man” who brings all his furry friends of different shapes and sizes that can surf and drive! We read and then re-enacted the famous book of Mr. Mandela meets Mr. Hare where we could recap our knowledge of money. Our trip to the Giraffe House created excitement for some and for others it was where they overcame their fears of ‘creepy crawlies’. Singing at the Matric Valedictory was a very special occasion. Another memorable day was dressing up as something you found in the garden. We really have had a most enriching year and we thank our superheroes for being such special shining stars throughout. Each one of you has made each and every day unique for us, your teachers. It has been a privilege to spend time with you and watch you grow and mature. We are so proud of you all. The Grade One’s have had a busy, fun-filled year which has passed by far too quickly, but we shall keenly watch your progress as the years pass and you grow and experience more wonderful things. GRADE TWO Have you ever wondered? If we are not meant to have a midnight snack, then why is there a light in the fridge? Grade Two: Food for T hought… What does it mean to eat a rainbow? Which foods are healthy and which foods are unhealthy? Why is it so important to eat a balanced diet? If something is not good for you, then why do they sell it in shops? What are food groups? These are just a handful of the questions that the Grade Twos set out to answer this quarter. For starters, they took a look at their own lunch boxes and categorised which foods they thought were healthy, unhealthy and even somewhere in-between. They teamed up in small groups to research the different food groups, using books from the Epic! digital library, created posters and presented their findings to their classmates. Afterwards they designed their own delicious menus for a balanced three course meal. For the main course of our project learning unit, the Grade Twos were challenged to create a whole grade collaborative food album filled with fun healthy snacks for kids, designed by kids and made by kids. After all, food should be appealing to the eye as well as nutritious, right? They thoughtfully designed their own healthy snack that would inspire children to want to eat wholesome foods and constructed it in the classroom. And of course, the proof is in the pudding… the Grade Twos couldn’t wait to taste test their own scrumptious creations and they all agreed that they were finger licking good! Learning about food was not all that was on the menu for Grade Two. They have also explored alliteration, contractions and integrated our PBL with Roger Hargreaves’s Mr. Bump story and made their own Get Well card for this poorly, injured, much loved character. It is with confidence and enormous pride that we send our Grade Two classes forward to enter their final year in the Foundation Phase. GRADE THREE GRADE THREES WERE ABUZZ… This quarter started with a BUZZ! Queen bees, drones and worker bees were spotted all around campus sporting tutus, crowns, antennae and wings. The Grade Threes were busy bees as we used critical thinking skills and our problem solving ability to answer the driving question to our PBL (Project Based Learning): Why are bees important and how can we save the bees? Using their excellent ICT skills, learners created a poster on how to save the bees and had fun using their communication skills recording their oral presentation in FlipGrid. We were so excited to visit Kirstenbosch, which is one of the world's seven most acclaimed botanical gardens. Learners and educators explored the gardens. We learned many interesting facts and ended the outing with a lovely group picnic amongst the fynbos. Our Growing Minds Celebration was a memorable event for everyone. It is wonderful how Parklands College acknowledges all our learners and their unique talents and achievements. We should like to take this opportunity to wish our Grade Three Learners all the best for their new adventure as they cross the road to the senior preparatory campus. We shall miss your smiles, hugs and seeing you on our campus, but we will never forget you. “It's time to say goodbye, but I think goodbyes are sad and I’d much rather say hello. Hello to a new adventure.” Ernie Harwell
