Quarter 1 Newsletter 2020

5 this year. Our vision of mass participation is being realised in this sport, but at our infancy stages, results have not been forthcoming in some of our teams. Our 1st, U/15, under 13 boys teams enjoyed an excellent season. With the introduction of tennis training during PE lessons, we are confident that tennis skills will be enhanced. We are very proud to have five College players represent Western Province this year, namely Ryan Baines, Jaryd Visser, Michaela Korsten, Storme Pike and Michael Loram. FIT FLEX Fit flex continues to grow at the College and this year Mr Fredrick split the group in two, with a session for each of the groups. Fitflex is a goal oriented fitness club that focuses on core strength, agility, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Fitflex includes warm ups, calisthenics, yoga and Pilates inspired movements, traditional exercises such as squats and pushups, walking/ jogging/ running and various stretches. SOFTBALL Softball continues to be a popular sport for our girls. This year we entered eight teams into the Western Province league. This season was fun filled with many games being played at home and away. Our 1st team consistently performed well throughout the season. The highlight for the juniors was hosting the 2nd edition of the under 13 festival, with 8 teams attending. We will definitely host this tournament again next year. The team of the year this far is the U15A girls who went unbeaten for the quarter. SWIMMING We participated in a number of galas, achieving satisfactory results and the highlight was 1st in our leg of the league galas and finally 4th overall in the league. The commitment of the swimmers is to be commended. Some swam for their local club, the College and played in water polo teams. We had a good swimming season and are looking forward to the Spring Quarter season.. Cybersmart Swimming again joined forces with us to deliver very professional coaches. We wish the swimmers all the best in their winter programme and cannot wait to see their progress in the summer months later in the year. TRAIL RUNNING After the growth shown last year, we decided to introduce two teams for running this year. A “1st” team for the serious runners and “2nd” for learners to gather the necessary skills and fitness levels to be able to compete in races in the near future. We trained at the College on Tuesday and travelled to Meerendal for weekly runs for the advanced runners. Next quarter trail running moves to Cross Country and we are hoping that we have record entries into the league. CRICKET With a full complement of five teams our season was a success. We are resolute in making cricket enjoyable for our learners creating a cricketing stronghold on the West Coast. Results did not always go our way this quarter, but our determination and improvement throughout was evident in the latter stages of the season. We are very excited about our youngsters coming up through our system, as strength for our senior teams in the near future. Darian Naidoo, Kyle Warrender and Dante Swanepoel performed extremely well and made it through the latter stages of Western Provincial trials. We wish them well for the latter stages of this selection. PRE-SEASON RUGBY/HOCKEY/NETBALL Pre-season training started in early February in preparation for the Knight Netball tournament, West Coast Festival and Southern Cape Sports Tour. Our Netball took part in the annual Knights Netball Tournament hosted by Bosmansdam at the of February. Although it was our first outing for both our U/16 and 1st teams, they did us proud, with our 1sts finishing 3rd out of 18 schools - an outstanding achievement. Our U/15, U/16, 2nd and 1st Rugby teams, together with our 1st Hockey team and our U16 and First Netball teams took on our local rivals at the West Coast Festival. All teams performed well, especially as this was a pre-season festival. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Southern Cape Sports Tour due to the risk of infection caused by the coronavirus. In conclusion, I would like to thank all the parents, learners, educators and coaches for an amazing summer quarter. Fields, courts and the pool were full with learners training and playing matches throughout the season, which was really rewarding for the Sport Department. While we are saddened by the cancellation of our tour to India for the cricket and hockey teams, we are grateful for the many other opportunities we still have. Winter season is upon us and I hope that we are going to embrace and commit to our sporting codes on offer in the same way it was done in the Summer Season. Please enjoy your holidays and come back refreshed and ready to spread our blue and whites stripes throughout the Province. Thanersen Pillay Head of Sport
