Quarter 1 Newsletter 2020

4 FIRST AID The First Aiders have been busy with a lot of events around the school, including helping out at PCFM, sports matches, house events, galas and tournaments. First Aid also allows you to show your support and earn service hours. Each First Aider is required to do a minimum of 8 hours a quarter. We look forward to expanding this club and showing the College how much First Aiders do at their respective events. Please keep an eye out for the next course available. - Anika van der Walt and Morgan Gibson MINDFUL LIVING Mindful Living is a service club in which we learn to be more conscious about animal cruelty, our environment, the people around us and ourselves. We come up with innovative ideas on how we can make a change in our community and Cape Town as a whole, and this year we have been volunteering at places such as Dassenberg Rescue Centre, Franschhoek Farm Sanctuary and Fallen Angels. During our weekly utility slot, we have been discussing issues like fast fashion (how the clothes we wear impacts the environment), the ocean, climate change, animal testing in the beauty industry and how we can be mindful towards ourselves. We want to make the world a better place for animals, so whether you want to join us and help make a difference through your eating habits, the mascara or hair gel you use, walking dogs or recycling so we don’t harm the ocean, you are welcome to join us! - Keziah Human and Courtney van der Walt UMPIRE AND REFEREEING Umpiring and Refereeing is not all about writing scores down on a piece of paper or blowing a whistle at the right time. It is about learning the rules and language of each and every sport. We have not only been helping out at formal sports matches, but also House events. We are trained by professionals and anyone interested may apply to attend one of the courses. Our members have also helped out at water polo tech tables and acted as linesmen for rugby and timers for galas. - Chiara Fruet and Milena Fieggen PEER SUPPORT To be a Peer Supporter you have to take part in a training programme through Life Line. Throughout the duration of the Peer Support course this quarter, we have been taught to be aware of people who are possibly upset, in trouble or just in need of a friend. We have also been taught how to motivate them to focus on their strengths and work on their weaknesses and where you can help out in the school, community and your personal life. - Conrad Johnson FLASHMOB Flashmob comprises of two main parts, the first being capturing school events. Our team members have been active in updating Instagram, taking photos and recording events - sometimes even using a drone - this quarter. If anyone would like to get involved or have photos taken at an event, please contact Mr Oliveira, Camryn or Christine, so that we can make the necessary arrangements. There’s a second side to flashmob… content creation! We have been posting a series called Viljoen Fridays on the Parklands College Learners Instagram. This has been very well received and we hope to continue with this next quarter. - Christine Greig, Emile de Klerk and Camryn Abrahamson INTERACT Our goal for 2020 is to build long-lasting meaningful relationships with organisations whom we connect with on a regular basis. Because of this, we have planned an Interact activity every week and will continue to do so throughout the year. With this being said, we will most definitely be revisiting Vaatjie Primary again with the Literacy Project. Interact has visited and assisted various organisations this quarter - from the beach cleanup and parkrun volunteering events, which both took place at Eden on the Bay, to walking dogs at Fallen Angels and doing hands-on work at the Home of Hope - yes we worked in their garden. These diverse activities have sparked new friendships. We also baked biscuits in our own hospitality kitchen for the residents at Sea Park Nursing centre. This quarter, we held a collections drive for the Dunoon Recycling Swop Shop. We also hosted a cake sale where a whopping R2618 was raised. The proceeds will be going to the Warrior on Wheels foundation - this organisation aims to uplift and empower children with disabilities by providing special adventures tailored for these children, thereby changing perceptions of ability and bridging gaps between able-bodied and differently-abled communities. Once again thank you to everyone who has joined us on our outings and contributed to our initiatives to help those less fortunate. - Christine Greig, Thor Hambly-Nuss and Nieka Ireland We would like to thank everyone involved in serving at the college and in the community at large. You are a true inspiration to us all and exemplify our Service Motto of Reaching Outwards. Kaylee Musikanth and Cayley Hefer- Service Prefects Thank you to all educators in charge of a Service Club at the College. Head of Service Sue Smid SPORT It has been another amazing start to the year with a jammed-packed summer season and preseason winter training happening behind the scenes. This year has seen record numbers for summer sports, which resulted in 35 teams entered in various Western Province leagues. WATER POLO We entered 6 teams into the league, one of which was an under 13 girls team that went unbeaten throughout the season. The highlight for the senior teams was attending the prestigious Oakhill Open Water Chukka festival. The learners enjoyed the tour immensely, gained more experience in playing the sport and achieved the best results in recent years. With growth in this sport, we will look into signing up another two teams, either in the 3rd quarter or at the start of next year. TENNIS Tennis continues to grow at the College, which resulted in us entering 12 teams into the league
