Quarter 3 Newsletter September 2019b
4 5 a league one up from our usual league. We had nine teams this year playing and they performed exceptionally well in the higher league. Congratulations to Unam Gida and Chantel Myburgh who were selected for the Cape Town High School Team. They participated in the national tournament as part of the Western Province team during the June holidays. CHESS Under the mentorship of Mr Loseby we entered a senior team into the Western Province league this year. Chris Boshoff, the captain of the team, lead with impressive performances against most of the challengers this season. Chris Boshoff has been selected to represent Western Province U16 team at the National Championships in Gauteng in January next year. SOCCER This year saw a record number of boys signing up for the sport which bodes well for the future of the sport. There have been many highlights this season and we are proud of all our teams’ performances and display of sportsmanship on the field. The girls soccer teams played tactical soccer, early in the season, and achieved great results. Our girls are dedicated, committed and show a real passion for the game which is evident on the field. HOCKEY This season saw hockey entered into a league for the first time. This meant playing on an surface, which is very different from grass. Our girls trained diligently and with the talent in our teams, we achieved some excellent results. This augurs well for our tour to India next year. Congratulations to Katia Leca on her inclusion in the Western Province North team. The winter season was a huge success for the College. We had a record number of learners representing Western Province in a variety of sporting codes, meaning we are being recognised in sporting circles around the Province. We wish the learners all of the best during the off season, knowing that next year is going to be a very successful year. CULTURE Close to 3000 people had the joy of watching our wonderful musical production of Cats; another masterpiece directed and produced by Catherine Dodders, Head of Culture. It was a beautiful showcase of talented artists, musicians, actors and dancers at the College. We are immensely proud of all of them and look forward to our next production. Feedback from the audience: It was a feast for the eyes and ears and I had to keep reminding myself that these were students performing at this level of excellence! - Margot Cornelius After teaching for 13 years at a number of different schools, I can honestly say it is amazing to witness the talent and greatness that comes out of learners in the right environment. You can see they have been nurtured, offered every opportunity and assistance to help them soar. I really am speechless. – Andrea Lightley ….when your 10 year old son is still humming away to the CATS theme song 2 days after the show, you know it was very very good. I feel that I have to commend Parklands College on a world class show. This was not a run- of-the-mill school play... it can actually be showcased at the Baxter. It was faultless. - Lisa Marie Jainundh The singing was a joy and I wish to single out Ms Tatum Coleman, for her beautiful rendition of 'Memory'. It is an iconic song and 'nailing' it, so to speak, was extremely important. Suffice it to say, this young lady was more than equal to the task. It was a "goosebumps producing" rendition and had the audience in raptures. Credit must be given to the Orchestra, who were excellent and the lighting crew, for timeously changing ambiance to match the flow on the stage. - Sandy Govender PUBLIC SPEAKING & DEBATING SALA PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION Congratulations to Imrah Salie, Connor van der Hoven, Mila and Zara Leask Baggesen who have made it to the national final of the South African Literacy Association public speaking competition taking place in Witbank, in October.
