2021 Magazine

139 2021 | Edition No. 24 | A stop start year lay ahead for our enthusiastic sporting department. After losing out on an entire winter season and the second half of the summer season last year we were eager to start with sport this year. The year started with practices and no matches as we patiently awaited the go ahead from the Department of Education. Unfortu- nately no summer sport matches took place but we had a record number of learners participating in sport this year. Our winter programme started with much of the same as the summer season but after a couple of weeks matches finally went ahead with some of our teams getting to rep - resent our College for the first time since 2019. Just as we started building up some steam, sport across the country was halted once again. Most of our 1st teams did not play, which was felt by all of us, especially the matrics. We are extremely excited to enter 2020 knowing that much planning has gone into this vital year of sport at the College and for the country as a whole. With many learners not playing matches in their year groups for al- most two years we find ourselves with learners playing in senior teams without having gained the necessary age Chess has continued to thrive at the College and has been able to adapt to the COVID restrictions with online matches and training. Chris Boshoff continues to assist in the building of the sport at the College. We are very grateful to have access to his level of expertise and experience. CHESS SECONDARY appropriate skills. We however have programmes in place to fast track our learners in each sport. Getting our sporting brand to a broader community is criti- cal for the College. To achieve this we have secured a three year sponsorship deal with Only Realty. We both feel that our relationship will benefit the learners at the College and also afford us the opportunity to market ourselves to a wider audience.
