Magazine 2020
174 | Edition No. 23 | 2020 Our vision as a department for 2020 has been to excite, encourage and engage with our musicians. We com- menced the year with our first Music Boot Camp experi - ence which brought together our Jazz Band, One Voice Vocal Ensemble, Orchestra and Marimba ensembles in a two-day Music Collaboration. We enjoyed learning spe - cially commissioned and arranged repertoire for this oc - casion which we showcased to an appreciative audience, music-clinics with specialised trainers, a performance and appreciation of Indigenous Music, as well as taking a look at the Music journey of some of our past learners who came to share their story. The highlight of course was the Amazing Race which got everyone running around the campus, getting to know each other while enjoying the adrenalin rush of the race. The next adventure on our mission was to ensure that each of our Grade 7s and new learners had an opportu - nity to get to know, see and hear what the music depart - ment has to offer. Our specialised teachers demonstrated, showcased and signed up interested musicians almost im - mediately. The Jazz Band began the year with perfor - mances at various College events and an annual visit to Riverglade Retirement Centre. This is always a highlight in the year and a wonderful community engagement ex - perience. The highlight of our Quarter 1 Music Calendar was none other than, The Parklands College Festival of Music. This year we welcomed 157 youth musicians from around the peninsula onto our campus. Our musicians were led by Maestro Brandon Phillips, coaches from the Cape Phil - harmonic orchestra and had the opportunity to make music and share a stage with the incred- ible Ms Zolani Mahola. The PCFM concert ended in an electric closing performance that had the entire Curie Hall up on their feet includ - ing the orchestra.
