Magazine 2020

173 2020 | Edition No. 23 | 2020 promised to be the most spectacular year for Drama at the College with fifteen super talented Matriculant Drama learners ready to conquer the stage. Fortunately due to reasons beyond our control the date and venue of the South African Shakespeare Schools Festival was moved to March and the venue was The Fugard Theatre. Accustomed to having more rehearsal time to prepare for the event our initial reaction was one of mild panic. However, in light of what was to come, we are all incredibly grateful that we worked so hard in Quarter One to mount the production of A Mid - summer Night’s Dream on 11 March. The show was well received and one of the last performances at The Fugard before lockdown began. The Matrics had their moment and a very merry time was had by all. The production was set in Africa at a game lodge and the Cats costumes were repurposed into monkey costumes. The fairies in the play thus became a troupe of mischievous primates. Drama Alumni Murray Fogg, Daniella Mizrachi and Retha Jordaan were com - missioned to assist with costume making, props and jewelry making. The show was a beauty and the performances of all our FET Drama learners top drawer. Unfortunately the plan to perform the show again on Shakespeare’s Birthday had to be shelved due to lockdown, but this doesn’t diminish the fact that we made the absolute most of the opportunity when it was there. Eisteddfods are an important public platform for our learners and, as all Eisteddfods were cancelled this year, we decided to start our own Internal Virtual Eisteddfod assisted by Mrs Buckle Head of Culture, and an experienced Eisteddfod adjudicator on the Prepara - tory side. Trinity and Grade 10 & 11 FET Drama Learners were also entered into theWestern CapeVirtual Eisteddfod. Thank you to my colleague Mr JoshuaWyngaard for his unflagging support and all the hard work he puts into Drama at the College. May next year bring us all back together again. Till then have a great holiday. Catherine Dodders Trinity Examinations were held in October 2019 and the ex - aminer was Mrs Kate Somerby from the UK who expressed how impressed she was with the College and our Trinity Learners. Mrs Somersby is part of the core committee that has established the new Trinity curriculum that we are following in 2020. It was a real privilege to have someone of her calibre adjudicate here at the Col - lege and a great opportunity for learning. The results were positive with Brooke Elliot achieving the top spot with a distinction of 88%. The following learners all passed with Merit:Thomas Janisch, Zara Leask-Baggesen, Somikazi Qwemesha, Jemma Daries, Storm Elliot, Sandro Conceica and Alexandra Bradley - Dull. Congratulations to Camryn Ryhlander-Hermant, Sienna Schenk and Tara Dixon for passing Grades 4 & 5 Speech and Drama.
