Magazine 2020

168 | Edition No. 23 | 2020 Without change, something sleeps inside us, and never wakens. - Duke Leo Atrides We are privileged to be in an environment that has the support and initiative to let us be as creative as we could possibly dream, whether physically or virtually. This year has certainly given us enough scope to awaken all the creativity within us and to teach our Cultural subjects using even more varied and creative tools than before. Throughout the year, many different mediums have been ex- plored inArt and Design, both at school and online. Our learners were tasked with observing and incorporating objects around their homes to create artworks. To successfully draw from their imagination, learners should be skilled in drawing from direct observation. This gives them the right set of tools and the fine motor skills to create from there and use this to visually rep- resent bigger ideas to people around them, ultimately solving real world problems. The learners learnt to paint using coffee and made homemade paint from kitchen cupboard ingredients. They improved their photography skills by taking photographs of quirky and inventive drawings that included an everyday object, in a new and imaginative way. These enhanced skills can be ap- plied to projects across all of their subjects. We are exceptionally proud of our Preparatory artists, who combined, won the most Diplomas at the Cape Town Ei- steddfod and received the Ford Motors Rose Bowl award. Drama across all grades in the Preparatory School is vital as it helps to build confident learners, with excellent commu - nication skills, who are able to vocalise their ideas, thoughts, feelings and discoveries in an articulate manner. These skills are essential for our future entrepreneurs and leaders. The weekly Drama lessons were filled with amazing recordings of poetry, tongue twisters, actions to music, storytelling, characterisation, interviews and script work. With each new recording, our young learners have become more confident, exploring communication in various ways and becoming crea- tive agents. Our Drama Society members have morphed into seasoned actors, managing to play various characters in their cho- sen scenes. This has led to them becoming experts at editing too as they have been able to record their ex- tracts and edit them together into a movie. Their crea- tivity has no limitations. We are extremely proud of the learners who partici- pated in the Poetry section of the Western Cape Virtual Eisteddfod and achieved excellent results. Our Senior Preparatory Drama Society members also had a chance to present a collaborative item with the Dance department. ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin’ featured poetry, ballet, modern and tap with some excellent characterisa- tion sequences. The Junior Preparatory ‘Special Person’s Day’ is always a highlight of the third quarter, and this year, it became a Virtual day with some elements shared live with our ‘Special People’ at home. The theme of ‘My Playroom’ allowed us to venture into a magical world where Poetry, Art, Dance and Music bring the toys to life.
