165 2020 | Edition No. 23 | Our Netball teams took part in the annual Knights Netball Tournament hosted by Bosmansdam in February. Although our first outing for both our U16 and 1st teams, they did us proud with our 1sts finishing 3rd out of 18 schools which is an incred - ible achievement. Our U15, 16, 2nd and 1st Rugby together with the our 1st Hockey team and our Netball teams mentioned above took on our local rivals at the West Coast Festival. All teams per - formed well and did us proud. Lockdown 2020 No mask can hide the disappointment our depart - ment endured this year due to Covid-19. Months of planning and more planning promised that 2020 was to be the best year for the department at the College. Unfortunately, no winter sport took place, and the cancelling of the Southern Cape Sports Tour and our second international tour to India was a tremendous disappointment. As the world scrambled to deal with this virus which eventually entered our borders, we had to do the same by shutting down and going into a compulsory lock - down. As a department, we came together to produce what we felt was an amazing online offering to our learners whilst they stayed at home. We initiated an online storm with our “Parklands Secondary Sport” YouTube Channel, Tik Tok account, Insta - gram and Facebook pages. To start off, we kept our learners busy with weekly Google Classroom lessons and assignments to show off their skills at home. Our amazing prefects, Liezl My - burgh and Brogan Barrett, ran the #parkiehomesportchallenge Tik Tok challenge. As a result of their enthusiasm and social media prow - ess, we reached over 16 000 views on this platform. On our YouTube channel we posted weekly online fitness sessions hosted by our winter sport captains and play - ers, together with Chad Phieffer, Tara Goliath,Mr Chaise Fredrick and Bianca Botha. To keep up the morale of our learners who were restricted to their homes we challenged them to weekly fun challenges. Participation was high and some of the videos really blew our minds. Thank you to all that contrib - uted to a well run online programme that proves that adaptation is very possible and that sport can be con - ducted on and off campus keeping our learners fit and healthy throughout the year. waterpolo SECONDARY SPORT softball running rugby swimming
