153 2020 | Edition No. 23 | creative club ___________________ The Creative Club engages in DIY maker- spaces where learners can gather to create, invent and learn. Learners get the oppor- tunity to explore the use of 3D printing, software, electronics, craft and hardware supplies and tools. This is an exciting place and space for learners to visualise, idealise and be creative. During the first quarter, before lockdown, learners made their own lizards using beads to create beaded creatures. It was an activity thoroughly enjoyed by all. chemistry club ___________________ The Chemistry Club members experi- mented with new ways to create plastics out of organic and environmentally friendly materials. We created many samples of biodegradable plastics made of starch, glu- cose, and vinegar. After the strict measures were put in place as a result of Covid-19, members of the Chemistry Club contin- ued to do research on their own regard- ing physics or chemistry experiments they found interesting. Jana Grobbelaar Chairperson makers and inventors ___________________ This club was started after Lockdown. The main aim is to create practical, innovative products and solutions to solve real-world problems using digital and mechanical dis- ciplines and tools to analyse specific prob - lems and develop meaningful solutions. The process spans across multiple facets from the conception of the initial idea, evaluation and design, the build from pro- totype to product and finally we look at concepts like commercialisation and Intel- lectual Property Protection. We are ob- sessed with inventing new products. The vision is to enable the learner to have the skills to be a self-sufficient entrepreneur in the future. Hosted in the Experium in the Parklands College Innovation Centre both Mr Changunda and an industry expert will be running workshops on product develop- ment on selected days. Brainstorming, De- sign, Analysis, Production, Costing, Raising Investment and protecting your Intellectual Property are some of the main facets that we will cover. By the end of this course you will have the theoretical understanding and practical ex- perience necessary to undertake your own commercially viable venture with the op- tion of a mentor that can assist and guide you along each step of the way. One of the OPTIONS offered in this new utility will be the choice to take part in the first year launch of Robot Warz South Af - rica. Parklands College has recently taken delivery of two battle robots, Dozer and Flipper, that will be entered into the Robot Warz SouthAfrica competition at the 2021 rAge Expo in Johannesburg. The nature of the competition is to build a robot that will challenge other robots with the goal of doing battle and winning challenges by destroying competitors robots to advance to the next stage. This utility OPTION will equip learners with the mechanical, elec - tronic, programming and strategic skills needed in order to adjust the robots de- sign on the fly while facing the challenges presented by other competitors.
