135 2020 | Edition No. 23 | Day Two started with some blustery winds but the camp leaders cautiously continued with the activities planned. There were 4 groups all involved in sand boarding, penguin viewing, Buffelsrivier Dam sailing and team building games on a rota- tion basis. Unfortunately, after lunch the wind was too strong for sailing, so the learners were in for more team building, fun and games at the camp site. The evening ended with the class representative speeches and some hot chocolate before bed. DayThree started with breakfast, some fun and games at the camp and then theWar Cries. It was a really enjoyable camp and the learners thoroughly enjoyed it. Zara Leask Baggesen: “Camp was an amazing experience that we will never forget!” Kobe Human: “It was a fantastic Grade 8 camp!” Alexander Ducasse: “It was an amazing camp. I overcame a fear and I loved being on the dam.” Indy Bern- ing: “Our Grade bond was much stronger at the end, I Loved Camp” Grade Heads: Keith John and MariskaVenter GRADE 9 BACK-TO-BASICSCAMP ELGIN Grade camps always start with a mixture of emotions that range between excitement on the one hand and trepidation on the other hand. This year’s Grade 9 camp was no exception. There were several worried parents trying to hold their tears back as they sent their sons and daughters off in the two bus- ses that transported us to the Back-to-Basics Forest Camp in the Elgin region. “The camp was extremely fun, from the late night singing, to the activities and the potjie making. I definitely enjoyed my stay overall.” – Tristan Hardie “… the food was decent and glad to say it was the best camp food so far, and the army tents were surprisingly better than rooms. We heard the trees dancing in the wind and we all bonded more. The whole experience was phenomenal. The camp counsellors were very nice and generous and were willing to help with anything. – Jamie Gillingham “Camp was an incredible experience to bond with new peo- ple while doing physically and mentally demanding activities, but as always it turned out to be a lot of fun and we learnt many valuable lessons.” – Heidi Rossouw Mission accomplished! Grade Heads: Don Duffield and Ivanna Combrinck (and Candrine Atkins) After a two hour bus drive we arrived safely in the beauti- ful surroundings of the Elgin area. With the Lebanon Forest running up the rolling hills surrounding the nearby lake, it felt like we had been transported into another world. Our military style accommodation in large army tents pro- vided our Grade 9s with the opportunity to spend a lot of time with learners with whom they might not normally have done so. The tents were filled with vibrant energy and laugh - ter that ran late into the night past “lights-out”. During the day our Grade 9s were kept busy by the very competent and energetic facilitators. A variety of activities were on offer, including “high ropes”, archery, airgun target shooting, practical problem solving and lawn games which included playing a mixture of rugby and hockey with pool noodles. Team building was the name of the game.
