Magazine 2020
122 | Edition No. 23 | 2020 Innovative Learning & 2020 has been a year of change. Many of our educators have said that this has both been the most amazing year of professional learning as well as the most challenging in years. It has been a year of breaking down silos between subjects in the GET phase and an oppor- tunity for educators and learners to integrate differ- ent subjects into more meaningful projects and at the same time reducing workload - allowing for meaningful collaboration using a variety of differ- ent technologies. The opening of our Innovation Centre at the Secondary Faculty has given us so many more spaces in which innovative learning can flourish. The demand for our large open collaborative spaces increased as educators focussed on interdisciplinary collaborations. The flexible nature of the new spaces fostered a new creativity from both learners and educators. The learning pods, equipped with a green wall for greenscreen movie making, an Apple TV for pres- entations, and glass whiteboards for planning pro- vide ideal environments for creative agents to thrive. In the first quarter the Grade 9 learners embarked on a collaboration between Natural Science, Crea- tive Arts and Technology where they explored how various systems in the human body work. The learners were allocated into groups and started a discovery process to understand the different systems in the human body. The innovation centre provided the per- fect space for us to collaborate as many educators from different disciplines in one space. The learners made use of the pods connected to the Collabs to break into discussion groups, design and film short movies about their systems as well as using augmented reality apps on their iPads to create animations of their systems. Learners were given opportunities to explore their system using art, electronics, virtual reality, anima- tion and designing quizzes on the content they had learned. At the end of the quarter they started to build a physical model of the system they were learning about. At the end of Quarter 1 lockdown hap- pened… and we launched into #eDayEve- ryDay. At Parklands College we have #eDayEveryDay
