Magazine 2019

85 PORTFOLIOS The House prefects went into 2019 with much spirit and excitement for the year ahead. We were extremely eager to see the energy the new House Captains were going to bring and we were not disappointed. House events kicked off straight away in the first week of the Summer Quarter with the inter-house swimming gala, which allowed the House Captains to showcase their leadership skills to the rest of the school, with each house performing their chosen war cries. Our goals for 2019 were to help improve creativity and spirit within the houses as well as to try and make the House Captains’ lives a bit easier, as we know how stressful it can be. We are extremely pleased that all our House events portrayed participation, teamwork and many new, original war cries. Preparation for the House events is a massive challenge, with nothing more demanding than the annual House Plays. Time and again we were pleased with the successful outcomes and as for the House Plays … they proved to be as good as we all expected. Being a House Captain is a matter of trial and error; hence, in every way possible the House Prefects attempted to be the right wings for them all. The role we played is something no other experience could offer us; it brought along unforeseen challenges, which made the positive results a thousand times sweeter. We would like to thank Mr Wyngaard and Mrs Esterhuizen, our Heads of Houses, for helping to organise the many events that took place this year. We are extremely grateful to have had them as our mentors to guide us through this busy, yet successful year. Alex Jacobs and Robyn Kaiser Sport at the College has improved immensely and this year has been filled with many exciting and new events, such as our first international sporting tour, the opening of our newly laid sports fields and many festivals and other sports events. Our main aim for this year was to increase the level of participation by encouraging learners to be committed to their chosen sporting codes. It paid off, not only when the fields were filled on practice days, but also in the results of matches. This year the U19A netball and rugby teams embarked on the College’s first international tour to Ireland. This tour was a great success and the teams gained much experience. At the same time the U19A hockey, U16A rugby and netball teams attended the Southern Cape Sports Tournament, where they played against some of the best schools in our league. Earlier in the year the 1st team water polo boys and girls attended the Chukka Festival in Knysna, where they were faced with some tough competition, but always gave it their all. To celebrate the first game played on our new fields, the Parklands College Autumn Festival was made an official annual event. In collaboration with the Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy, our annual T20 tournament was another highlight, as was attending the Oakhill Cricket Tournament in Knysna. To prepare for Derby Day, all teams worked hard and we were pleased with the results. All of this would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the educators and learners at the College. We would like to thank Mrs Steyn for her constant support at sporting events, Mrs Bloem and both Mr Viljoens for their dedication to coaching and organising events and matches, all the coaches and managers. Lastly a big thank you to Mr Pillay, our Head of Sport, for his hard work and dedication to sport at the College. Shane Rosslind and Kiara Meerburg 2019 was a truly a magnificent year in the Culture Department and we were honoured to have been part of the Culture team. We were given various tasks to do at various events throughout the year and we were also presented the opportunity to host our own independent, fully student-driven talent show. Some highlights of the year included events such as the Matric and FET Art & Design exhibitions, the Parklands College Festival of Music (PCFM), Parklands Got Talent (PGT) and most importantly, 2019’s Musical Production, CATS. Our major contribution to the College this year was the inaugural showcase of Parklands Got Talent (PGT), an open competition for learners where they could display their talents to their peers. The winners of this exciting evening were ‘That Boy Band’, with their show-stopping group act. We saw great integration of all spheres of the Culture Department in the May Culture Assembly, which showcased the dancers entertaining us HOUSES SPORT CULTURE
