115 cordings for the Jazz Band and many events on campus including working on the many elements for Cats. The junior classes have initiated various projects including production of sound effects, recording original material and working with vocal overdubs on down- loaded backtracks. In the course learn- ers have recorded various elements as part of their curriculum which will culminate in a complete music produc- tion and video. The senior learners have been busy recording “mood music” to be used as background to commercial vid- eos. Hands on projects like these open the learners up to new challenges and to an understanding of the exciting world of communication. Technovation Carike Cass & Rachel Manyathi Every year, Technovation invites teams of girls from all over the world to learn and apply the skills needed to solve real-world problems through technology. Nearly 20,000 girls around the world registered to partici- pate in Technovation 2018, building apps and starting businesses to solve problems in their communities. The Parklands College team, called Pro-team, have been designing and working on theirTechnovation initiative since last year, in 2018. Pro-team met with the Ambassador for Technovation in South Afri- ca, Baratang Miya. The team was selected as Semi-Finalists in this worldwideTechnovation initiative, the only senior team from South Africa to reach this stage! Although they didn’t go through to the finals, we are very proud of them and the change-making technology dream they are living. The Write Club Jessica Herbert The Write Club successfully facilitated the process leading up to the English Olympiad in March. The learners participating in this competition were able to read and unpack the prescribed short stories for the English Olympiad this year. The interesting discus- sions relating to the short stories allowed the learners to better relate to the content, adequately preparing them for the test to come. Following the English Olympiad, The Write Club focused on developing the imagi- nation by focusing on images to ignite inspi- ration and individual stories. I cannot wait to see what awaits this club in the future! Umpiring and Refereeing Society DarinViljoen This year the Umpiring and Refereeing So- ciety kept busy with assisting in sports matches. We were back up and running af- ter the drought season last year. Learners were referees and umpires at our winter sports day and running linesman and touch judges during the quarter on match days.We continue to teach our learners to assist in the officiating on match days, as this not only teaches them more about the sports they love, but also helps them see the official, who is in control of the match, in a more positive way. WorldCulture Society Jackie Pillay World Culture Society is a club that stud- ies various countries and different types of cultures. We aim to focus on two countries every quarter. This year, we have studied Korea and Brazil, Angola and Por- tugal, Ecuador, Romania, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. We learnt about the history, the difference in equity, culture, social life and economy of the various countries, as well as their cuisine. It was most interesting to learn about the languages. For example, we learnt how to construct words with conso- nants and vowels of the Korean Alphabet. It was also fun listening to the different ways Portuguese is spoken in countries other than Portugal. We loved our cuisine parties where we tasted delicious food and drinks.
