Feline Frenzy Our Preparatory learners are extremely expressive, and we support the thoughts of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German writer and politician: Individuality of expression is the beginning and end of all art. By encouraging this individuality in all our learners, we have assisted in creating the most beautiful, experimental and promising works of art in the form of Artistic creations, Music and Drama. Our Art and Design rooms are always a hive of activity and there was much excitement when we started to use the three dimensional printer. Designing and printing the pieces provided hours of fun, and the application, Morphi, helped us in the creative process. We implemented the MakerSpace concept in our Art classes. The learners were given various topics and required to design and create using an assortment of materials. It was wonderful to see the creativity and inventiveness shining through in our learners. We spent time painting, printing and drawing using a variety of mediums, and learners taking our co-curricular classes were exposed to the use of mosaics, decoupage making, design of dream catchers and fine-finger work using beads. Three dimensional works were made in clay as well as other materials and we used various applications on our iPads to assist in the creative process. Our year culminated in a wonderful Art Exhibition, showcasing artworks from the entire College. Project Based Learning became a focus from quarter two, and the learners were exposed to projects which had Music, Art and Drama components. We used various applications for our projects, and the learners received a masterclass in how to apply the applications to their projects during their Library lessons. This enabled the learners to use four lessons per week to experiment with and create their works of art. Clay sculptures were the focus in quarter two and in quarter three we used various presentation techniques and styles as our inspiration. We showcased the creations from these projects on the television screens around the campus and the learners were most proud to have the exposure. Drama lessons became very interesting with the arrival of a green screen in the room. Learners could record their presentation in any setting they desired, which gave them the scope to take on various production team roles. We have a few budding sound engineers, costume designers, set designers and directors amongst us. Our co-curricular groups continued to experiment with different presentation styles and excelled at their Eisteddfod work. Learners who take individual music lessons participated in various events this year. We enjoyed the ‘Majors and Minors’ Concert, which was a collaboration of Preparatory and Secondary Faculty items. Our annual June Music Concert was very successful, and our learners are gaining greater confidence with every performance. The Junior and Senior Orchestras are very popular, and the Orff Ensemble has grown tremendously. The Marimba bands learnt more traditional and modern pieces and their performances are always a highlight. We are very proud of the achievements of our choirs, and the Senior Choir won their episode performance of the KykNet ‘Sing in Harmonie’ competition. The choir was selected to participate in the finals in Pretoria at the end of the year. We had a number of learners playing Trinity Music examinations, all with outstanding results. 64. 21st Edition
