First Aid FPV Drones The President’s Awards Club This year saw the fruits of the hard effort and dedication put in by some of our learn- ers who voluntarily entered The President’s Awards programme, with Bronze Level awards going to Jade Bremner (Grade 10), Megan Bremner (Grade 12), Makenna Coleman (Grade 11) and Tara O’Sullivan (Grade 11). Mia Pretorius (Grade 12) and Cecilia van der Walt (Grade 12) were recipi- ents of the Silver Medal award. All of these learners put in many hours of hard work in our school community and into developing themselves and their broader community. As a school we are immensely proud of them. DonovanDuf field First Aid This year the Sports Department absorbed the First Aid society and it worked out well. In March we had our first level one course (via MEC) and currently have 35 First Aiders. Our Chairpersons (Olwethu Mtalana and Anika Vd Walt) have organised and communicated tirelessly to ensure that our society is always ready for the next event. The students also had an opportunity to accumulate service hours if they are working towards the President's Award or a College Service Award when they volunteer. Term 1 highlights include the West Coast Sports Festival, Term 2 highlights include Cross Country League Races and Term 3 highlights include the Parklands - Reddam Derby Day. Marc Viljoen FPV Dronez Parklands College prides itself on having an extensive variety of clubs available to learners. One of the newest and adrenaline fuelled, is ‘FPV Dronez’. Individuals who have been bitten by the proverbial bug in one of the most popular and upcoming international sports, are able to discuss a variety of FPV issues including different models, flying tips and the latest headlines in the news during Utility. On Thursday afternoons, however, they take to the skies with both outdoor and indoor quads (also known as 'drones'!). Although this is no longer a new initiative, it has really ‘flown’ in a big way and we have already hosted a national competition aptly named 'Drone Wars' and also a Regional Qualifier both of which saw our own Parklands pilots participate! Anthony Peters Let’s Create Club Learners explore their creativity through the use of drawing materials and freedom of expression. Let’s Create is a relaxed atmosphere where learners can learn new artistic skills and exercise existing skills to keep on growing in an innovative direction. This is a drawing club, where learners will engage in different ways to draw traditionally and digitally. The focus is to enhance fine motor skills and practise the art of drawing. All creations are made on a two dimensional surface. Learners have also enjoyed turning their 2D creations into 3D work. This is mainly a GET club, and learners made characters from recycled material. They have assembled whimsical little creatures. They have also designed this character in an app called Morphi and their designs were 3D printed. With an app called Chatterpix, learners could make their creations come alive and add voice and movement to their characters on a digital platform. Carike Cass 162. 21st Edition
