Close to a quarter of the learners at the Secondary Faculty signed up for music tuition in piano, guitar, ukulele, voice, drums, brass instruments, marimba, bass guitar, cello, violin, clarinet, saxophone and flute this year. The Mozart Centre is a happy, vibrant place with musicians coming and going from early in the morning before school to the very last minute of the day. We are extremely grateful to our passionate music teachers for preparing our learners for Eisteddfods, Trinity exams, performances at various College events and our subject music learners for their practical examinations. “Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.” Kahlil Gibran Cape Philharmonic Orchestra Visit Parklands College is very proud of our association with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and our learners are incredibly privileged to watch them performing live in Curie Hall every year. Founded in 1914, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) is arguably the most versatile and active orchestra on the continent of Africa, contributing handsomely to Cape Town’s global status and appeal. This movie themed concert was incredibly well received by our learners and even had them spontaneously singing along to Can You Feel the Love Tonight. PCFM Festival of Music Our annual Parklands College Festival of Music was another proud day for the Parklands College Music Department. This concert is a collaboration between Parklands College and schools from the wider Cape Town community, resulting in over 60 musicians performing together in one orchestra. After a day of fun filled rehearsals, a beautiful Classical Music concert was staged, celebrating the joy of music. The acclaimed Maestro, Craig Nicholas, from the Cape Town Philharmonic Conducting Studio, was the guest conductor for the day. The programme included orchestral favourites like The Moldau by Smetana and famous numbers like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Included in the programme was the College’s vocal ensemble under the direction of Mr Johan Swanepoel. They performed a few beautiful pieces after also spending the day in rehearsals. Special thanks to Anjulie Nock for starting this wonderful annual tradition. Majors and Minors in May Concert In May we showcased the musical talent across the faculties where ensembles from each of the faculties had the opportunity to perform one piece. Our Majors (the Secondary Faculty) join the Minors (the Preparatory Faculty) in a combined concert. Musical Ensembles typify one of our key global competencies - Purposeful Collaboration - where musicians develop the ability to work with each other to produce what cannot be produced on their own. Our concert this year showcased a number of ensembles from our marimba bands to Orff ensembles, choirs, orchestras and our Jazz Band. 126. 21st Edition
