Magazine 2018

The Jazz Band continued to make musical waves in 2018 through a variety of activities that included performances, workshops, competitions, tours and recordings. The year began with an annual visit to Riverglade Retirement Centre to perform for a wonderfully appreciative elderly audience. This is always a highlight in the year and a wonderful community engagement experience. Soon after, the band performed at the V&A Waterfront Band Slam in the outdoor amphitheatre. The evening was a memorable one and we wish to thank Mr Mayers and all Parkies who came out to support. The band also provided entertainment for an evening at the Black Bull Steakhouse, competed in the Sans Souci FACETS competition and performed at a number of school functions, including yearly concerts at the Preparatory Assembly and the Parklands College Majors and Minors Concert. The June-July holidays saw the band tour to the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown, chaperoned by Ms Claire Holmes, where they engaged in workshops and lec- tures with top international performers and also performed on one of the main stages of the festival. The end of the year saw the band record and release their yearly EP in the Parklands College Recording Studio with Mr Cameron Holly. The Jazz Band consists of Frank Smuts, Libo Mavume, Hendrik Smuts, Juaneque Human, Adam Colley, Eden van der Watt, Michael Oliveira, Sofia Suliman, Ilse Thomas, Hayden Visser and Louis Bosch with Mr Dean Flanagan as the bandleader.
