2021 Magazine
170 | Edition No. 24 | 2021 I n spite of the obstacles thrown up by the pandemic the Drama department continues on an upward tra- jectory inspired by the challenges rather than defeat- ed by them. As we were forced to adapt ourselves to performing within the constraints that keep us safe as performers, we rose to the occasion by finding new ways and means to stage a play. The learners’ growth is matched only by their resilience and talent. Our learn- ers continued with their performances at assemblies and Trinity tuition. They prepared themselves for participation in the Western Cape Virtual Eisteddfod and the Internal Parklands Eisteddfod, the latter adjudicated by our very own Mrs. Buckle and Dr. Darlington Sibanda. The need for diversion and entertainment has surely nev- er been stronger in the world than now and the Drama Department has given its all to boldly demonstrate that this is possible. It might not be the same as years past with the grand spectacle of shows such as Cats, Alice in Wonderland and Oliver! But the drive remains and on the horizon the promise of a brave new world shining with possibilities and hope. The FET Drama learners known as The Company, joined by some learners from Gr 9, took to the stage for a filmed and streamed production of The Merry Wives of Windsor for the Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa. Wearing transparent face masks with lavish costumes on a custom built set the learners would have made Shakespeare, himself no stranger to the plagues which hounded his era, very proud. Congratulations and a very special mention are due to Morgan Santo in Grade 8 who recently spent months filming Ridley Scott’s HBO Max Sci-Fi Drama of Raised By Wolves Season 2, filmed right here in Cape Town. We look forward to the release of the production later this year. Congratulations to all of our Drama alumni who are making waves in the local industry and internationally. A special word of thanks to Mrs. Roth and Mrs. Steyn for their continued support and belief in the necessity of the Arts to provide balance and enrichment in the lives of our young people, your support is what feeds us. Thank you to Mr. Joshua Wyngaard for this contribu- tion and collaboration; and thank you to the technical team who are always there for support and advice when needed. Thank you to all the parents and guardians who encourage their children to explore their passion for per- formance and allow them to express themselves and fulfil their dreams of performing at school and, in some cases, beyond. Your support is like sunlight to a flower, it allows our young people to feel seen and heard at a time when it matters the most.
