147 2020 | Edition No. 23 | “I completed the psychometric assessment last year before making the necessary subject choices for Grade 10. I found the assessments super helpful and it assisted me greatly in making my choices. The assessments really helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses and subsequently the choices I made for this year (my grade 10 year). I couldn’t be happier with the choices I’ve made and I feel that the as- sessments guided me very well in terms of allowing me to be informed enough to make the right choices. The assessments didn’t tell me exactly which subjects I should take however it gave me great guidance in terms of my strength, weaknesses as well as taking into considera- tion my aptitude. I believe that without the psychometric assessments I would have taken other subjects which would have been a mistake because I am 100% happy with the subjects I take now.” - Jade Apsey “The process of choosing subjects in Grade 9 is a daunting experience, especially, if you aren’t sure of your future career path. The psycho- metric test helped me identify my personality type, it highlighted my strengths and made it easier to decide on subjects that would benefit my choices for tertiary education.” - Connor van der Hoven CAREERS EXPO On Thursday, 5 May, we held our annual Careers Expo. The new Innova- tion Centre was a hive of activity as parents and learners gathered to meet with representatives from over 50 different local and international higher education institutions. This year, it was an absolute honour to have a stall from our very own Parklands College Further Education. Some exciting advancements are on the horizon indeed! GRADE 9 SUBJECT CHOICE EVENING Grade 9 is a very important year as learners need to choose elective sub- jects for the remainder of their school career. Learners and parents are offered career guidance and support to help learners make their final sub - ject choices. As part of this process, the school counsellors facilitated a Subject Choice workshop where students were provided with valuable information about university admission requirements, which is important to consider before making subject choices. We then held our first online Subject Choice Evening onWednesday, 12August. The event aims to equip learners and parents with the necessary information to help them make informed decisions about their subject choices. “STUDY INTHE UK”VISITS PARKLANDS COLLEGE James Harding from “Study in the UK” came to visit the Secondary Faculty of Parklands College on Wednesday, 29 January. Learners and parents interested in finding out more about tertiary studies in the United Kingdom attended the event. Valuable information was shared about application procedures and the centralised ser- vice that students use to apply to universities in the UK, called Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). JOSH RAMSEY On Friday, 12 October, Josh Ramsey from BeInTouch addressed our learner body during an assembly to talk to us about the implications of digital overuse. In hon- our of Mental Health Awareness Day that took place in the same week, it was also the perfect time to remind every one about how important it is to be authentic and vulnerable with one another about where we are at. Sometimes it’s okay not to be okay and in these times we need to learn to rely on those around us who love and care for us. social and emotional well-being
