Magazine 2020

119 2020 | Edition No. 23 | animals in our community such as beach cleanups, bake sales, collections of sanitary pads, essential goods and clothes for the communities of Du Noon and Vaatjie Pri- mary School, individual volunteer work at Change Makers Hub, walking dogs and do- nating food to Wolweriver and Fallen An- gels and just reaching out to old people via a Virtual Cup of Tea Zoom Meet and Vir- tual Music Concerts, amongst many other worthy initiatives. We ended our time as Service Prefects with Slipper Day for the Reach for a Dream Foundation, which was a fun way to end our tenure and a great tradition that we have had at the College for many years. It has been incredible to see all of our Service Clubs and the Col- lege as a whole contributing significantly to our community and really embracing our motto of: Reaching Outwards and Building Lives during these uncertain times of the Coronavirus Pandemic. Kaylee Musikanth and Cayley Hefer Service Prefects The Technology Portfolio was very in- volved in different facets of school life this year. We decided to be more in- volved in every portfolio and advance the College’s use of technology in 2020. This ranged from the scoreboard and sports events to training the prefects on how to correctly use microphones when speaking on stage. We introduced our new learn- ers to their devices and taught them how they work as well as giving useful tips to aid them in their school careers. With the assistance of Mr Philander as well as the Sound Engineering team, assemblies have become more efficient and the technolo - gies used have become more diverse. We have also recabled and reorganized our various work spaces and equipment to ensure more efficient use. Seeing that all assemblies and events had to be streamed due to COVID, we were quite busy in the latter part of the year. With the expertise and guidance of Mr Mayers we’re excited to see further improvements from those who follow in our footsteps and wish them best of luck for their tenure. Mathew Mizrachi and Gianpiero Etzebeth Technology Prefects Who knew the 2020 sports year would play out the way it did? We were eager for another exciting sports year with weekly practices, matches against a variety of schools, Derby Day, sports festivals and multiple tours, including an international tour to India. The year was off to an exciting start. We established our very own sports Instagram and YouTube page to promote sport at the College and to showcase the sport- ing talents of our learners. At the start of the summer sports season, we initi- ated captains’ training to provide all our sports captains with the skills needed to lead their teams successfully. We hosted an U19 Water Polo Festival and our play- ers toured to the annual Chukka Festival. We introduced our first-team players be - fore their matches using our brand new scoreboard. Two of our U13 softball teams showed off their skills at the College’s very own Soft- ball Festival. Our summer sports teams had a successful season producing excel- lent results while creating memo- ries on the sports field. Our winter sports season start- ed like any other with our netball, hockey and rugby teams partici- pating in the annual West Coast Festival at the start of March. Our teams were hard at work preparing for the 2 tours planned for the March holidays when Covid-19 arrived unannounced. Our sportsmen and women were devastated when travel re- strictions meant that these tours had to be cancelled. However, our teams may not have been able to run out onto the fields, but this didn’t shatter their hopes of a memorable winter sports season. Our teams remained in high spirits, completing drills at home that were demonstrated by first-team players and posted on our You - Tube channel. Our first teams created en - tertaining videos to motivate learners and fellow South Africans to stay safe during the pandemic. We also launched weekly sports challenges including a TikTok chal- lenge where learners produced entertain- ing videos to showcase how they kept fit during lockdown. With the return of our learners on campus, we were able to host afternoon fitness sessions, ensuring that we follow strict protocols to keep our learners safe. It was nice to see our fields buzzing with learners doing what they love after nearly three months of not being able to make use of our spectacular fields. This may not have been the sporting year that we had hoped for, but it has definitely been a year that we will never forget. To the College, thank you for electing us as your sports prefects of 2020. It has been a tough and challenging ride, but it was incredibly rewarding and definitely worth - while. We are so thankful that we were able to leave our mark on sport at the College. We will cherish our time in of- fice. Our blood will forever run blue! Liezl Myburgh & Brogan Barrett Prefects of Sport sport technology
