Magazine 2019

3 will house an Educational Holodeck, Robotics Laboratory, a MakerSpace, collaborative learning spaces, breakaway boardrooms, and large flexible learning venues. Designed with purpose and infused with technology, each space will allow for enhanced teacher collaboration as well as cross- curricular integration. Learning spaces are omnidirectional with multiple display screens, which can be used either together or independently by learners and educators. MakerSpace and Robotics laboratories are interconnected to provide a specialist environment that will enable learners to design, create and prototype working solutions. Breakaway spaces will be enhanced with green screens and digital displays where learners can meet to plan, discuss, present as well as create media content. The introduction of Digital Electronics within the Innovation Centre will commence in January as a new Matric subject. How the years have simply vanished; however it is with confidence that I can say that we have positively touched the lives of thousands of children and continue to do so, as we build opportunities for each learner to create a successful present whilst working towards a brilliant future. Thank you to each and every one, learners, parents, educators, principals and the Board, for making this school what it is and for contributing towards the outstanding teaching and learning that takes place. This is only possible with ‘one heartbeat and many minds’. A wise person once said,“In these turbulent times, he who learns most... wins, and in today’s knowledge based world, education is the only sustainable basis for progress and prosperity.” The pages of this year’s magazine are filled with wonderful life experiences and success stories. I hope that you enjoy them with us! Life continues to evolve and there are very few among us who can say that the fourth industrial revolution has not touched our lives in some way, taking us on a journey into the unknown, creating unprecedented opportunities and a new world of work. This is taking learning in a new direction - driving innovation. The introduction of new subjects and a new way of teaching and learning continues to evolve, disrupting and challenging the innermost core of what we believe to be important. Although the world continues to change, the basic needs of children remain the same; love, care and an excellent education are at the top of the ladder. The responsibility falls on parents and schools alike as we reinforce our shared ambition which is to create successful adults whose values will ultimately underpin their actions. The aim of education is to prepare young people to be socially just and willing to serve with dignity, respect and honour. Learning takes predominance over teaching, and because learners are acquiring knowledge differently, this knowledge needs to be channelled under the guidance of enthusiastic and dedicated staff who are led by resourceful and compassionate principals. We continue to promote critical thinking, effective communication, purposeful collaboration, creative agency and responsible citizenship, together with the ability to adapt and continue learning all through life in society and a changing world. Our work in progress turns 40, as we celebrate the opening of Christopher Robin Pre-Primary in 1980, our relocation to the Western Seaboard in 1989 and the development of our College. This year has brought us a new accreditation which will take us into further education, hopefully providing our learners with training beyond Grade 12. It is with great anticipation that we look forward to the opening of our new Innovation Centre at Sandown. This new building will provide us with 4 000 square metres of additional learning spaces and is future-focused in design.
