143 ‘Just remember that wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness.” – Lucius Seneca Some of our projects in the first se - mester: • We got involved in assisting Sanccob with their collections for the rescued baby flamingos and even preparing meals for the volunteers • We donated books to theVaatjie Primary School’s Literacy Project in aid of Project Literacy onWorld Read Aloud Day, visited them and got involved in their reading project. We also collected and prepared a packed lunch for one of their outings. • We sold ribbons on Cancer Awareness Day and raised R1800.00 for a cancer patient’s Memorial Service. • We facilitated a Marshmallow Egg Drive to donate to a few underprivileged schools in and around Cape Town. • We visited Huis Zonnekus with baked goods and cards, all of which were made by Committee Members, as a late Valentine’s Day treat for the elderly residents. • We visited Cheshire Homes, staged a concert and shared our stories with the residents. • We collaborated with other clubs on possible joint initiatives in the future at our Interact Camp over the weekend of 5 - 7 April. • Four of our Committee members attended the Ryla (RotaryYouth Leadership Academy) Camp in March and returned as group leaders in September. • We supported the Reach for a Dream Foundation by raising over R5000 with Slipper Day. Some of our projects in the second se- mester • For Mandela Day the College man- aged to raise R19000 for the Pen- insula School Feeding Scheme. This means that we can feed a class for a year! • As part of our August Awareness Month, we participated in the an- nual Rotary One-to-One initiative reaching out to 3 400 intellectually challenged fellow citizens. This ex- perience is always very special and humbling. • A number of learners and staff par- ticipated in the Blisters for Bread fun walk to raise funds for the Peninsula School Feeding Scheme. • Our main focus for August Aware- ness month was to fill Santa Shoe - boxes and Santa Paws for our furry friends and we managed to fill over 100 boxes. • We managed to sell over 200 topes of hope for the Sunflower Fund which raises funds towards recruit- ing blood stem donors. Finally, we would like to wish the in- coming committee all the best for 2020 and thank our very supportive and gracious Parklands family for mak- ing a difference by giving back to those less privileged.
