135 The Junior and Senior Orchestras are very popular and the dedi- cated group of learners have performed various pieces through- out the year, both classical and modern. The Marimba bands learnt more traditional and modern pieces and their performanc- es are always a highlight.We are very proud of the achievements of our choirs, participating in various competitions throughout the year and they are continuously working on their craft. Some of our senior orchestra members had the opportunity to visit the Sandown sound studio and now we have a group of aspiring sound engineers amongst our learners. Our educators are encouraged by the dedication and commit- ment of our young learners and firmly believe that “We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.” ― Arthur O’Shaughnessy “Music can change the world, because it can change people.” The Secondary Faculty Music Department continues to flourish under the guidance of exceptional music teachers. During the orientation week our Grade 7 learners met our team and had the opportunity to try out each instrument we offer and even participate in Marimba and Choir auditions.With close to 200 music applicants this year, the magic and power of music will certainly be changing lives. Our greatly anticipated Parklands College Festival of Music of- fered like-minded musicians and educators an opportunity to enjoy a day of music collaboration under the baton of the Cape PhilharmonicWind Ensemble resident conductor, Dr Faan Ma- lan.A vibrant and excited group of 120 musicians from 16 differ - ent schools participated and received masterclass and sectional training by members of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra throughout the day. Our lunchtime concert series have been a tremendous success and have provided many with the stage time to platform their hard work and talents. The Jazz Band performances included a visit to River Glade Retirement Centre, participating in the V&A Waterfront Band Slam Competition, showcase concerts at the Preparatory Assembly and the Parklands College Majors and Minors Concert, a joint concert with some neighbouring schools at the Bon Amis Music Picnic, the Reddam Durbanville Derby Day Bands Showcase, as well as performances at various College events and Assemblies. The end of the year saw the band record and released their yearly EP in the Parklands Col- lege Recording Studio with Mr Damian Philander. - BONO Parklands Orchestra and OneVoice Choir provided much entertainment - from accompanying the school with the school song and national anthem at our weekly assemblies to entertaining audiences at our lunchtime concerts to collaborating with each other on a Johnny Clegg Medley for the Awards ceremonies. Parklands College boasts 3 vibrant and energetic Marimba Bands of 8 players each. They have performed at our Majors and Minors event, lunchtime concerts, Break time jams in the Quad, GET and FET Evening concerts as well as the annual Marimba Festival at the Baxter Theatre. Our FET Subject Musicians continue to thrive. Special mention must be made of Juaneque Human ,who was nominated for the Afrikaanse Eisteddfod concert and Lik - hona Mbovane who will be participating in the National Youth Orchestra Summer Course, as in the Cape Philhar- monicYouth Orchestra.
